There are many types of brain damage, and there are many extents of brain damage.

Unfortunately, oxygen deprivation is probably one of the worst kinds, short of literally losing brain matter to severe physical trauma. Though, being nicknamed "scoop" might be worth it, IDK.

Fortunately, the brain is very good at rewiring itself, and shrooms have shown potential in helping this happen.

Nervous tissue, as a rule, doesn't repair itself. From a survival standpoint, the potential risk of a bad repair isn't worth it if you survived the initial injury. For example, if you damaged your spinal cord to the point where you couldn't walk, and in an effort to heal, your body accidentally destroyed your ability to breathe, you'd be worse off. Evolutionarily speaking.

So, it will get better over time, but it depends on what you do. Since you're dealing with oxygen deprivation, you haven't directly lost individual parts of your brain, but your brain is just functioning worse as a whole. It's not like someone that lost their ability to make decisions, or emotions, or fear. You lost a little bit of everything.

If you keep that in mind, you should be fine. You'll have to work harder than most, and that sucks, but you don't have any specific issues to overcome. Based on what you've said.

I'm not a brain doctor, I'm an internet idiot who thinks they're smarter than they probably are. Listen to real doctors.

I wonder if supplements that increase BDNF can help in a case like this. Anybody know? I also recall thinking a few years ago that massive doses of fish oil might help with traumatic brain injury, but a) I don't remember what the argument was, and b) I don't know whether that is applicable in this case (as it is not traumatic, and also is not new).

sounds like it might have been a tension hemothorax or just a hemothorax. broken ribs can cause some internal bleeding that can get trapped around the lungs and squish them so you can't breath as well. do you know if you got hit in the head too? that could cause a different kind of brain damage.

Not really sure what the prognosis is with something like this, but I think the recovery can go on for several years, so you'll probably keep slowly getting better if that's what the doc is telling you. Looks like there are studies being done a drug called Aricept (donepezil) that has shown some promise to help a bit with memory impairment in cases of traumatic brain injury while people are recovering, but I couldn't find anything about using it in hypoxic brain injury except in one case with a pediatric patient. You could ask your doc if there are any drugs that would help you function better, and maybe mention that one specifically. I'm pretty sure that's the drug you read about. There seemed to be a lot of publications on it, and I found people that made posts saying it helped with their memory after TBI. might help for hypoxic injury as well for all I know. It's not a bad idea as far as I can see.

I had a friend get some brain damage after a car crash, and he did get better after several years, but not the whole way better. he's functional though, and he does okay. Holds down a decent management job, makes decent money, and seems to enjoy his life well enough.

you seem like a good dude. I hope you get better, man. Keep at it. A neurologist might have some better ideas about drugs that might help with your memory. I'm guessing you're seeing one, but if not, you might want to schedule an appointment. They'd know a lot more about this stuff and they see lots of brain injuries. old people get hypoxic brain damage fairly often. I was kind of surprised there wasn't more research on what you were asking about. the stuff on TBI has been around for a while, and that drug is used for memory problems in Alzheimer's dementia, so you'd think people would try it out a little more with hypoxic brain damage too.

Good luck, man.
