White mold or cubensis?
    #27221138 - 02/22/21 09:38 PM (2 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, this ones got me stumped, it’s pretty damn white, dense, and tall.  Pretty even growth and very consistent.

These are t1 transfers from a PE swab but I have doubts that what I have is cubenis.

Id try fruiting em. Might as well see what it is. I wouldn't be surprised if the myc just looks that way this go around. Id be optimistic.

Plus it looks like something is pretty consistent between a few of those plates.

Im a little newbie but id suspect high nutes.

Nice pics btw

Interesting, only done agar for a year but feel really confident. Havnt seen any plates end up like these before.  Interesting how they’re like all like that, transfer some and inoculate a jar why not. I feel like they look weird but it’s all of them so, try it

Thick plates plus high nutrients will cause a super rhizomorphic culture to get all puffy and tomentose like that. Those look awesome by the way.

Interesting. What is considered high nutrients? I use 8G agar 8G LME per 400mL water

Lastly, are there any pros/cons to these plates?

It’s the same 10g lme 10g agar 500ml water I always do.  These plates took a month for anything to show up, I ended up fridging them for a week to “try” and get some condensation, after about a week out of the fridge this showed up.  I’ll keep on trucking with this then.
That middle plate is the mother, after I made the transfers it got a lot more spots all over it like mold
Sporating, I just couldn’t find anything about white mold that looked like that.

That's lower than I use. I do 25 25 1000 but I use 2 oz no pours and pour them super thin. When I pour them thicker they get fluffy. Depends on the culture as well.

Dang thats super weird then. Definitely looks similar to cube myc for a white mold.

That does seem low. Ive seen cube myc go very tomentose on rich pda a long time ago. Ive been using straight oat grain water or diluteing it by half occasionally.

My current cube myc is extremely thin almost transparent other than a reflective organized film so id be inclined to believe that cube myc can look very unfamiliar to the pictures online.

Cool stuff

Sometimes the plates on the top rack get a little tilted and are thick on one end and thin on the other and my monoculture will be rhizomorphic and tomentose on the same plate.

You're good to go OP, just do a couple more transfers, you are in the realm of normal for cubes. Looks like normal ms to agar beginnings. Blessings on your journey.

Here’s an update on those plates.  Spawned to oats on the 10th.  They’ve been 100% for a few days now.  No idea what it is, defiantly not cubes.  Smells like straw and molasses.

Might spawn one to sawdust blocks and one to a shoe box just to see if I can find out what it is.
It’s a lot like oyster, but has a different smell than the blue oyster I’ve grown.
