Small casing = small mushrooms? Even with straw? (pics added * 1

This sort of seems like it should be obvious, but...

Are smaller casings a common reason for unusually small mushrooms?

I ask this because the local mole-man was showing me these small casings of wbs/verm/straw a la bluehoney's technique cased with verm/coir. The mushrooms have been very small. The strains are Cambodian and Palenque. I have heard of a small cambodian strain but 1" seems a bit too small. The palenque have been a bit taller but rather skinny. I would think the straw would help them grow larger.

Air exchange does not seem to be a problem as there is both a computer fan and an air pump bubbled through a water bottle. And this setup has worked fine for significantly larger amounts of substrate.

The current theory is that these are even smaller than cake mushrooms because there is a greater area fruiting yet the substrate is not much greater.

What do you think?

Depth of the substrate?

Thanks for the quick reply. About an inch.

Hmm I don't want to jump to any conclusions but that sounds a bit shallow. I have never gone that low but I have gone pretty deep and it produced some monsters, so just the opposite I guess that might be it. Maybe a second opinion from a veteran could confirm this.

Any more opinions? Even if the mole-man's theory seems to be correct and you have nothing to add, please reply so I can tell him what's going on.

Thanks

Surface area = more room for pins and therefore mushrooms.
Depth of substrate = size of shrooms.

Now don't hold me to it, but it's been my theory that the depth of the substrate, to a certain point, is directly related to the size of the mushrooms.  Think about it, there's much more nutrients availible to each mushroom if the substrate is deep- if it's shallow, there's more room for individual mushrooms to grow but less nutrients for them to use.

Just my 2c.  Any pics, btw?  Small shrooms are mycopr0n too!

Yeah I think it is the depth to surface area ratio thing.  Hopefully this means the yield will be distributed among more mushrooms but not diminished.

Here are some pics.  The better ones were already harvested but these were just taken since they were requested

Some over mature palenque:

Some itty bitty cambos:

And a curiosity thrown in.  This resulted from making a mycelial slurry.  Some grains were left on the side of the jar and you can see what happened.  This is really small.  The jar is a 6oz babyfood jar.  Check out the spore print below.  I love the tenacity of cubies.

Could be the cause, but you guy's aren't tacking something into consideration!! Uncased cakes that are just the substrate can produce ,in the right environment, reasonably good flushes with big mushrooms.  So (personally) I think it mostly depends on the state of your environment.  True?

There was a world famous grower who grew huge vegetables that did some classes down here, his technique was to do a 6 ft deep 8x4ft hole in the ground, fill it with soil, and other nutrients that plants love. His vegetables would be 40% bigger at minimum!

Just a bit of theory that deeper and bigger is better for HUGE shrooms... if you look on some of the shroomerys sponsor spore sites... they have giant rubbermaid tubs with substrate, and the shrooms are like feet tall! and THICK! its pretty logical.
