Try something by John Friend. Have you taken a class? Much better than going by a book, and so inspiring. (depending on the teacher). Good luck!

i haven't taken any classes on yoga yet.. i wonder how much they normally cost?
i'd just like a good way to get into shape (and as i mentioned before, lifting weights and being 'buff' grosses me out just as much as being out of shape)
i'll check out some stuff by john friend. thanks phishy

It's usually about 6-12 a class. Yoga bodies are the best. Tight, flexible, and all around beautiful.

i have something called achilles tendonitis, so doing a lot or [routine] jogging fuckin HURTS! ..so i try to stay away from it..and lifting weights is not something i want to do, because it will require me to a) buy weights, or b) pay to get into a gym that i'd never wanna go to.
and martial arts sounds ok but this thread was sposda be about a yoga book, not martial arts

Do you have a vcr? If you are not taking a class, that is the second best way to learn. Actually it is how I started. I started with this video: http://www.ashtanga.net/default.asp?s=20...store_item=7045
David Swenson is my favorite yoga teacher. He has some great stuff on his site. Where do you live? There are great yoga studios almost everywhere though some of them suck. Beware of yoga studios where the teachers play funky music and have loudspeakers (or whatever they're called). There are a ton of differnt kinds of yoga too, but if you start out with that short forms video, you are set. Swenson is the real deal. I've also heard lots of good stuff about John Friend.

I have no idea what kind of Yoga he does. He does it everyday. Around here, in the early am's their a yoga workout thingy on TV. But, alas I'm too lazy/doesn't have the desire to do yoga Maybe someday
Also it must feel good to do yoga with that beautiful landscape.

I can't tell you how much yoga cleared the negative stuff out of me. It releases so much stale energy so you can absorb the good stuff. At the end of a yoga session, you lay down for awhile so your body can "absorb" what you just did....then you turn to the side kind of in a relaxed fetal position, and just let go. This is the point where I would have some major releases...it felt so good afterwards. I hope you take some classes or get that video I linked to above. It is wonderful. It's great you're doing guided meditation too, Fungi. I hope you get what you are searching for.

beautiful! I've done some ashtanga, but never had that kind of form. Edit: it's no substitute for a book or a class, but it has some good pictures of the primary series, under the method section: www.ayri.org

Wow, awesome website. The pictures are great. I would love to go to India and work with Pattabhi. Have you done 1st series? Isn't it great? You guys are making me want to do yoga real bad! Oh and thanks for the compliment. Nothing like doing yoga in jeans.
