bleeding mycena most likely
    #2720071 - 05/23/04 07:40 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

i went camping for the second time this season. took a nice deep walk through the woods, but all that was found was an abundance bleeding mycenas i think.
the stems were really thin and red. there were fine hairs at the base of the stem. when the stem was broke, it oozed a dark red juice that really looks like dried blood on paper.
the caps ranged from bell shaped to flat, i only found a few flat caps. the gills ranged from close to distant and their edges were a dark red. The edge of the cap also had a dark red edge.
Unfortuantly i couldnt take a nice long spore print, but after about an hour it looked like a mushroom sporeprint watermark, so the spores were white i believe, unless it was just moisture.
these were all over the place on dacaying wood and moss

in the guide i have, it says the cap of the bleeding mycena are cottony, whereas the ones i found have a dark red edge, and the pic they have depict them with thicker stems. suggest they may be a lookalike, M. sanguinolenta because the gills have a deep red edge as well, but they dont have a picture of that type.

last year i found all the big good looking specimens at the end of the summer, i hope i find some more varieties up here sooner than that. i have to look for some mushroom clubs here in ny state

Your description certainly is a good one for Mycena sanguinolenta. The main difference between that species and M. haematopus is that M. sanguinolenta has marginate gills (the dark reddish edges you described) and M. haematopus does not.

Happy mushrooming!
