Made my first DIY Laminar Flow Hood 16"
    #27154037 - 01/17/21 06:49 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

16 inch filter from Amazon and 188 CFM inline fan. Seems to have calculated out good and passing my lighter test.
I do have more wood and plexiglass if upgrading more makes sense, feel free to offer improvements.

What is the grate you used to make the flow laminar?

Also, I'm surprised the flow enough given how small the fan is, and the fact that fans aren't as good with static pressure as squirrel cage blowers. Is it a decent filter?

I used a Novatek F4030 HEPA Filter Novair 1000 16" x 16" x 11.5" located on Amazon here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EC5ZO40/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I forget the website offhand how I calculated but seems 188 CFM was good for a 16x16. I might consider rigging a different fan if any issues, but had this fan already for circulation in a cannabis grow tent I had going a while back that needed power to pressure through a strong filter.

Oooooh, the grate is built in to the filter. And it looks like that filter might have a high surface area built in (internal filters in parallel?) to achieve a high flow rate without needing a really high static pressure.

But at that price, I'd see if I could attach a pre-filter to make sure it lasts a long time.

Yeah I did add a simple DIY pre-filter with home air vent filters, the little white strips you get for putting in your home exhaust. I need to pull the fan ducting to replace. I figure if I am doing this more frequently I might upgrade that part. The cool thing about my box, I just remove 4 screws and can replace the filter, so trying to make sure it can scale up if my plans on growing do as well. Right now it is just for fun and growing into an obsession lol.

Looks like the plenum is too small. The plenum should be at the very least 11.5 inches deep inn your case, because the plenum should be at least as deep as the filter is thick.

Pretty cool design though.

I did some cloning yesterday on freshly made agar plates, will know soon how it worked out. Feels good but have to see what the contaminants think.

inline fans are perfect for flowhoods, they are designed to move air in and out from growrooms, they have a flow rating curve for pressure levels, you just have to do the math, I have built 2 flowhoods with them and I never had a problem.

I noticed in the specs this filter is 99.97% efficient at 0.3 microns. Are these okay to use instead of 99.99%?

This particular filter has a SP of 1.4” w.g. which is pretty high actually.

That could mean it’s a high capacity filter with more yards of media inside, but I am curious as to what his blower graph looks like too.  188 CFM seems low.
