Im a huge Black Oil Sun Flower Seed Advocate. I found it for 19.99 for 40lbs in my new location. Bunch of Bird Lovers up here. I think Im paying 15.99 for 40lbs of oats, but I think BOSS has way less bacteria tendencies because of the lack of starches. As soon as I burn through this new 40lbs bag of oats Im switching back. Look how pretty these jars from last year are.

Fatty nuts and grains don't work well is my experience.. but now flax is considered good? Cool. They are cheap I guess? Lots of the cheaper wild bird stuff main in flax

What strain is that on the flax?

I always think of that picture when I see the huge bag of seeds at Walmart.

The main reason I like having them is I’ve noticed certain contams that don’t seem to affect the myc but will cause mold after the first flush seem to show up on them in the jars. The seeds get these little splotches on them but that’s the only sign til mold shows up later on.

@Small Talk, I dont remember probably TOC or Amazon. If your referring to Flax as Black Oil Sunflower Seed. I have had pretty good luck with them, they just take bit more detailed prep run. But I have to say that the fruit bodies love them.

@ AKA I think they are more tolerant resistant to Bacteria, I did have a few cultures hide some green, but I blamed it on my half ass plates at the time.

BOSS from 2020 4.11.2020

Im also a fan of Safflower Seed, high fat content grain but these RW's turned out ok too.

I think i just get tired of the cracked corn in the cheep WBS.

Cool, you learn something everyday. I thought the high fat content of sunflower seeds would make them unsuitable as spawn.

How'd you prep them? I'm curious.

Word. Fuck corn/peanuts.
Millet is good stuff but it's jst to dang small for my clumsy fat irish paws to deal with. Flax is also damn tiny, and pricey. I suppose i cud mix in some wheat berries, ya? It's been a while, but aint it all prepped the same way. Wud have to take care in drying like usual. Shit yeah! Mix a little of everything i like in there. Fuck oats.

I mean its the same as a fruit it was just sitting on foil for awhile. I dry them and add them to the rest.

Also with spore prints you don't have to monitor them. I usually end up with the caps on the foil for 2 days sometimes.

Well the old " Pressure Cooker your grains technique" of course. You know that one! LoL

I will wash and rinse the crap off of them. Then load into the PC and bring to a rolling boil for 35-45 mins or until the lock starts to engage. Then pour out onto a large flat surface on a canvas tarp and let them steam dry. Then load and PC.

Yes AKA Black Oil Sunflower Seeds or BOSS for short.

Does anyone use pint jars to expand to quarts? It would definitely help me in the SAB with low overhead.

It seems like colonizing a solid pint that you know will do well expanded to a few quarts is more efficient than waiting on a whole master quart to colonize.

I’ve got a question.. do you guys press down on your top layers when you lay them out?  I’ve always just lightly sprinkled them in and then level them out out but I’ve noticed that the top layers get colonized fully and they’re not really acting like I see everyone else’s I see in here.  I’m thinking that pressing down on them might slow the colonization and I’d see better pinning if the layer isn’t fully colonized.. I’ve been having to add more layer closer to pinning to get better pin sets but maybe I’ve just missed that piece of info along the line..

I press and mold my substrate pretty firmly. So far I have had great success this with lotsa clean spawn, maybe ~5.5qt bags, and nice clones. I say tamp with conviction. I also think the bags of oats that recieved millet masters may have been heavier yielders but that's speculation.

I used to press down the top layers quite a bit and I got full colonization too most times. Currently I just lightly tamp it down but also get full coverage on the reg.
I love to get full coverage with a top layer tho and I notice I get better pinsets that way, same with peat casings. Some (rare) genetics don't care about top layers and don't colonize it fully and I usually see worse pinsets from these.

If I want coir/verm to act as casing I can't apply it at spawn. In this case I let the sub consolidate some days after fully colonized with low FAE and then apply a coir/verm casing while at the same time increasing FAE.
An example:

Turned to this:

Heh.  That’s what I’m doing now.  Give it a very very thin CV layer to just cover the grains and then come back at day 8-10 depending on the culture and apply a 1/4-1/2” cv layer that partially gets colonized and then pins.  That’s only way I can get pea+ to pin evenly/in large numbers.  Probably has a lot of do with genetics though.. speed of culture etc. thanks for the replies
