Best antivirus/antimalware/net security like Norton (but better)?

Just wondering what the really decent antivirus/internet security suite is these days... I figure Norton will stop things like porn sites taking over your computer but if you're a target it's got to be the first checkbox on the list of workarounds a hacker or surveillance will have.
Thanks

The best way to stay secure is to keep your OS and all programs updated, and don't run untrusted code.
If you do this you won't need any AV, and if you don't do this, there is no AV that can save you.
What kind of security problems are you having that you are hoping the AV will take care of?

Any of following would be a good choice: BitDefender, Kaspersky, Sophos.
If you care about privacy remember that all anti-viruses have control over your entire system, monitor/record all your files, and phone home. On Windows, the windows defender is pretty good and free.
As an open source alternative, clamv would be a good choice for GNU/Linux.
For an advanced user, it might be better to run a virtual machine.

I just have knowledge that people know what I do on my PC, people that don't like me.
Hard to explain.
Virtual machine? I know what that is, but does that block hackers?

Using a VM protects the host running your VM, so most of the malware stays inside VM and cannot escape easily. With other words, an attack against your VM stays inside that VM without affecting your main host, where your private data should reside.
A useful feature of a VM is that you can take snapshots and revert to that snapshot every time you start your VM, so any changes done by a malware are reverted. Of course your snapshot must contain the latest software updates as Alan has mentioned.
Another feature is that host's OS can be different than VM's OS making harder for any attack to take place since now malware must deal with two different OSes, for example GNU/Linux and Windows. Most of the malware is designed to attack one OS, but not both.
A powerful host can run multiple VMs, each used for specific purpose without cross-over of data. This idea of compartmentalization is incorporated in Qube-OS.

Back up your data, reinstall the OS and don't click on sketchy things in the future.
