I assume you are being a little facetious. They would still know they were tripping. And if it happened repeatedly I doubt they would just shrug it off with some stupid explanation.

Yeah, I did. But if I was randomly tripping on acid day after day I don't think I would just let some goofball tell me I was sweating it out and just accept it. Especially if its only happening to me.
And it wasn't like people had zero sources of legitimate information(adults before the internet were more resourceful than you were as a child, they were used to finding things out without the internet) or were complete fucking idiots(which the person you are describing here would have to be). Dude was an adult, not some child ignorant and naive enough to just believe whatever he was told.
