Festivusmiracle said: Quick question…I did my inoculations this afternoon and noted that since I had shaken the jars after I took them out of the PC there were pieces of millet really close to the lip of the jar. I would imagine that isn’t great as far as contamination is concerned or maybe I’m thinking of the RR PF tek video with Roadkill lol. Should I have waited to shake really vigorously until after inoculation? I really wanted to get the moisture content right. The millet was super easy to prep and if this works I’ll probably not use anything else. Thanks again for all your amazing write ups!
What i found to work with millets stuck on sides or lid is to bang jar on opposite side with palm, i.e. if you have millets stuck on lid after shaking just bang jar on bottom few times and they will all fall easily, and also tap filter with fingers if there is one or two stuck under filter, i never had rye or wheat do that after banging i eventually just stopped caring xD but i think i m sold on millets even for my few jars i do now and then

3 of my 5 fars are ready to spawn.
Here are the other 2

they look "lightly" bacterial. on the left i see a line of trouble about 1/5 from the bottom and on the right, the top drains are not colonizing
should i spawn these 2 separately to SBs, or can i dump all 5 in a mono? should i give it another day or two?
If not, can i run a 54-qt tub with 3 jars?
what do you folks opine?
please answer. if i can get to my first mono that would be glorious!

The one in the middle would be the one I'd question the most.
3 shoeboxes is what I'd do especially if one of the jars is suspect and you're running less spawn than usual.

how far would a lb of millet go in making quart jars?
i get 2lb bags of rye from natural grocers and it works perfectly out to 4 jars. i would think you wouldnt be able to make as many jars with 2lbs of millet because theyre so much smaller.
i see some local feed store has 25lb red millet for 16 bucks, red millet work too?

Going off of some online sources, millet grain is 0.78g per 1ccm, and rye grain is 0.76g per 1ccm - so it's an insignificant difference, surprisingly enough, just about 2.5% more weight per volume with millet.

Big Question (for me)

Crack told me to shake the two previously posted suspicious jars. So I shook the fuck out of them. It has been just a couple of days and those jars are recovering —robustly and uniformly.
Shall I put the other three jars in the mycofridge to ket these catch up? They look very healthy.

Those bottom 3 jars do not have uniform growth at all, they are highly suspicious.
All 3 jars have very stressed, spikey mycelium combined with many grains that have uncolonized portions with possible wet spots.
This is uniform growth:

No uncolonized/wet grains pressed against the glass, no spikey tendrils, fluffy even growth without thick white patches.

I've outlined a portion of your jar that has these wet spots already. Notice how those wet grains have a thin halo of mycelium growing around the wet spots, they're avoiding bacteria. Those halos will start to look very white and thicken in between each grain, this is why your mycelium is growing those spikey tendrils, they're stressed due to the presence of bacteria.

Good luck with morels, doubtful to have success indoors but broadcasting spores outdoors seems to be worthwhile.

Was reading Stamets about fruiting morels indoors with a layer of soil. Not sure if this tropical climate would be kind to them.
At this point, I am just researching because, as I remarked with a grin, I had the commercial outlet in place before I ecen considered what to grow. For the farm, I have to do medicinals that aren't lion's mane because another company is selling those. And oysters are also no go. Looking at Reishi, and lloking through Hobbs Medicinal Mushrooms. Trying to see what is both useful and easier than not to grow.

will red millet work or is white better? reds a bit cheaper at my local feed store 16 for 25lb, but if it doesnt colonize as well ill just go with the white, 20 for 25lb

had to go for white millet since they didnt have enough red millet for the 25lbs discount. 20$ instead of 16$, still cheaper than rye i used.
soaked 11 cups dry millet in hot water (still can put my finger in) because im running out of daylight hours but want to get one run done tonight so might do 5 hrs soak time. looking to make 4 quarts of spawn. we are a go!

i hoped it would just be the same as cold soak except a little faster. its not really insulated or anything. i noticed when i soaked rye berries they get hydrated a lot faster with hot water so i thought millet would be the same. lets just hope they dont burst when in the pc
