Quick question…I did my inoculations this afternoon and noted that since I had shaken the jars after I took them out of the PC there were pieces of millet really close to the lip of the jar. I would imagine that isn’t great as far as contamination is concerned or maybe I’m thinking of the RR PF tek video with Roadkill lol. Should I have waited to shake really vigorously until after inoculation? I really wanted to get the moisture content right. The millet was super easy to prep and if this works I’ll probably not use anything else. Thanks again for all your amazing write ups!

Your jars are fine if you have grains on the shoulder of the jar or on the inside of the lip of the mouth, they will come loose sooner or later when you shake. The only thing I'd worry about is grain grains getting stuck up in your GE hole underneath your filter, this is a simple fix, tap the filter with your finger to dislodge any grain.
I've had agar wedges get stuck over my hole, I knew something was wrong when all of my other jars colonized fine and that one didn't show any growth whatsoever.
Just give your filter a tap with your finger after every shake, that's what I do...probably wouldn't be necessary with thin metal lids, thicker no leak ball lids catch grains in the GE hole though.

This has convinced me to go with millet. I just want to buy it in bulk and not separate from WBS. How many pounds should I order for a good starter bag?

Cool. I saw a 50lb online. I’ll go ahead and order it soon. I wish I could just pick up a bag locally but it’s all good.

Hey p9, you might have answered this already, but do you have any brand recommendations? I'm with Philoso in that the majority of my supplies are bought online and I'm very much still in that newbie anxious phase of limited cash and not being sure what to grab.

I get my stuff from a local feed supply store, no brand. I can't recommend any specific brand, but I'm sure that it doesn't matter much.

Found some white millet! Wasn't the cheapest option. But more than happy to support the mom & pops!

I hope the easy prep helps my neverending battle with bacterial spawn.

I might be able to save them tomorrow, I was too frustrated to take a good look at them today.
I'm building out my gourmet tent tomorrow so we'll see how it goes. May just have to make up some more bags.
I will be switching from actives to 100% edibles, should be having inspections and what not starting in my building soon so I have thrown out all live active cultures and masters that have been running.

It's just too easy to prep. Wheat does hold a lot more water but there's already 5 liters of water in my substrate.
I shake my bags 2 or 3 times to speed shit up.
I can find wbs cheap here with millet, milo, wheat and sunflower seeds. Will this soak be ok with this combination of grains?

There's wheat kernels in the mix?

Yes. That's why I avoided it. I was afraid the soak wouldn't hydrate the wheat.

It would be a great candidate for other prep methods, but I don't like wheat for soaking.

Does this mean we can expect some p9 quality posts about growing edibles? I'd be interested for sure.
Sucks that you have to clean up shop but glad you have a plan in place. Good luck!
