I should get some millet based wbs from Walmart.
These rye berries I'm using are expensive and not easy to get a hold of in bulk where I'm at.

Yup. Thought I finally got a source for millet and when I get there turns out price went up from $30/50lbs to $48. Noped hard and went for the WBS that was like 90% millet and milo already with very little sunflower seeds for $24/40lbs. Seems to be better quality than the Home Depot Pennington stuff as well.

It tells you that you need to shake your jars because all of the moisture settled to the bottom by gravitational action.

Yeah man, give it a shake and it will be 100% good to go. Check out these bags and note the variations in colour/moisture:

Such is the nature of millet.

fuck ya, appreciate the help so you reckon there is actual saturation differences within the actual seeds between those groups of millet or is it just how they appear from the outside?

Likely, I'm not sure what's going on at the individual level of the seed but there appears to be heterogeneous absorption of moisture probably due to variations in the individual seeds. Shaking evenly distributes the moisture though and is gtg for inoculation. It threw me off a bit when first using millet but it's not a problem at all.

just to be sure, no rinse for grains like wheat, rye? I always rinse many times cause muddy water after soak looks ominous)

I haven't rinsed at all but if you want to or think it's necessary then definitely go with your gut.

It doesn't seem to be a big deal. My last batch of grain did the same thing and the myc didn't mind.

I did a 14 hour soak while I was at work today and when I came home my first batch of millet was bubbling too! And this was indoors in my kitchen lol. The water was pretty murky too. I took P9’s advice and used a brewers bag and poured it in a 5 gallon bucket lined with the bag and it made draining it super easy. I even rinsed it a few times to get clear water and loaded jars and they are in the PC now. Excited to get my next batch going. My jar that was bacterial that I made a shoebox out of 2 weeks ago just got its first pins! Super excited to finally see some mushrooms! And it will only get better with better spawn
