This jar is an example of the recent wheat run. I ran 10 bags and two jars. I lnow it's too wet We are talking about 20 lbs wheat.
I plan to nocc everything with fingers crossed. alternatively i could wait to get another reishi culture and nocc with that.
Unless you think I should toss the grain, which I don't wanna do.

That's rough, man. I wouldn't bother investing anymore time and resources trying to play catch up with that.
At least wait a few days to see if it soaks up, but I wouldn't risk it if it doesn't. 20lbs of grain is easier to throw out than what you may lose downstream.

Yeah, thanks, p9. i have too many perfect GM plates and I'm trying to reduce actives and increase just reishi for now. do i took two plates and noccd one wet jar, one dry jar, and two different batches of millet. i also threw 100 ml from a half-dollor size into a perhaps even too dry bag.
and, i had one bag and one jar of wheat grow penicillium or another dusty greengray thing. out of a significantly larger run. don't know where it went south. the pc runs were perfect for sure. i got that 75x down. never had jars of millet die before re-opening them.
i shall report anything interesting.
i love this hobby.

I hope that it works out for you, sucks when you find out the grains aren't up to snuff after all of that prep and a long cycle. Good luck.

Okay, just prepped some birdseed my normal way, A: (two rinses, 12 hour soak at 135f and three rinses, load wet) and B: same thing with Culinary Lime added to the warm soak. (1 to 100 lime to grain ratio)
The Lime made the grains take up considerably more water (41% vs. 38%) which sucks for my comparison, because wetter grains tend to colonize faster, but not necessary better.
The lime prep got to 11.2ph vs 5.5ph with the non-lime prep.
The lime rinse water after three rinses was 9.7ph
I'll post photos soon. I'm skeptical this is a good move, but SCIENCE!

Meant to post in the lets talk grain prep thread. I'll post the results there... I think you are in there.

I just got done rinsing enough millet for 10 jars and have it soaking in my 1.5 gallon stock pot and a 2 gallon stock pot. Is there any risk of the grains expanding so much that it will cause these to overflow? Each pot is ~10 inches tall, the grain is about 2-3 inches deep and I the water is about 3 inches below the rim.
If I don't hear anything I guess I'll just update and let everyone know tomorrow

Wouldn't putting them in brewers bags/ paint strainers/ pillow cases and tying them solve it? I think you should be fine regardless.

12 hours in and there is no risk of overflowing. Next time I'll soak my 10 jars worth in 1 pot and not worry about it, I just didn't want to waste grain, make a mess and piss off my wife all at the same time lol

Am I missing something? I soaked 15 cups of dry millet in cold water for 19 hours and it came out the exact same size as dry millet from my feed sack, hard as a rock and seemingly completely unhydrated. What did I do wrong?
I need prepped grains tomorrow morning so I'll run some no-preps for the time being but that puts me 3 jars short I'd really like to figure this method out so I can fun a full 10 jar load

you can add a bit more water no prep style to get more water in the grains...
i felt the same way when i was doing this tek, they where still very dry after the soaking.

My 18 hour soak grain came out of the PC bone dry and nothing would grow on it. 7 jars, 3 different plates, zero growth a week in. The same cultures performed as expected on the no prep I ran next.
I don't know if they didn't uptake enough moisture during the soak or if the 3 hour cycle just cooked them too much.

After a 18hr soak my millet looks just like wet millet. never had a problem.
Load em after a 20 minute drain and run for 2 hrs. It should be fine.

Yeah cold water soaking does nothing to the millet I get here. Absolute waste of time for all grains too. Have to use heat to get them hydrated. I wondered if it's something to do with my tap water, it is quite hard.

If you are use to Crack's millet tek. P9's will look different after the PC cycle.
In my experience. P9's tek result in slightly wet millet with some water on the bottom of the jar which gets absorbed into the millet within a few days.

Cracks on the other hand can result in more hydrated looking & somewhat clumpy millet after the PC cycle.

Both teks work but don't expect the pressure cooked millet to look the same.
Hope that helps.

Seeds are not like larger grains. Soak as per the OP, then load with surface moisture present. The seed will pick up some water from the soak, the rest is absorbed during and post pc cycle.
Soak for 18-24 hours, drain, load, pc. Don't overthink.

This is millet vs oat and oat is way more dense and results are better off the same control regardless of the high number of inoculation points...

Agreed the less moisture the grain contains the better the results but I believe it's a matter of the surface moisture which is why larger grains I think work better?
I think millet comes out terrible due to the fact the smaller grains cannot hold the higher moisture and instead for proper colonization you must have almost wet looking grains which slows the growth down?
Now I have definitely figured my millet recipes out and I can use millet effectively no problem but newbies might have a lot of trouble with millet?
Oat grain is #1 in my extensive experience!!!
