Ah, yeah man, you must have deposited some mold during inoculation. If it was on top of your jar I'd say get new filters.

Hey P9
I was watching some of your vids and was curious. I did a 12 hour soak and then dumped my millet in strainers and left overnight because I didn't have time to jar them up and PC.
I jarred them this morning and they were still a bit moist bit pretty dry.
I'm wondering if they'll be okay because you mention you load the grains pretty wet as they soak up more during the PC?
I though of adding a bit of water to the jars before I add to the PC?

It should be fine, I've done it before without issue. If anything just rinse them under hot tap water and let them drain again if you're concerned about water content, don't add water to the jars.

In the OP it says to use 3 cups of hydrated millet to each quart jar I'll be using. Does this mean I should be prepping 3 dry cups per jar, or should I use less (maybe 2 cups) per jar to account for grain expansion?

Hi P9. Great write up, thank you for posting this.
I just spawned my first millet jars today (using your compressed top layer method).
I read some RR posts a while back while looking into popcorn as a potential grain.
Quote:
RogerRabbit said:Personally, I consider popcorn a poor choice of spawn material due to its large kernel size and high bacterial endospore count. The large kernels mean there is much less mycelium in a given jar then the same size jar would have if you used a smaller grain, since the mycelium colonizes the surface. RR
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: Popcorn does not colonize fast. The kernels are huge, so a jar of popcorn has less than half the mycelium of a jar of rye, oats, millet, etc. Thus when a 'jar' colonizes a few days faster but has only half the mycelium, it's actually slower.
He does place millet in the same category as rye and oats, however, there exists a huge discrepancy in size between rye/oats and millet.
Continuing his line of thinking - do you think millet would produce more mycelium compared to wheat, rye or oats - due to it's significantly smaller size?
Wheat costs me 49 cents per LB and millet costs $1.95 per LB.
It is very nice to work with millet but sadly it's difficult to justify spending ~4 times as much per LB.
You mention washing/rinsing millet until the water runs clear.
How do you personally wash/rinse your millet?
I have found that rinsing wheat is easy. Fill the bucket with wheat and hot water, mix it up, pour out the water and repeat.
Due to the small size of millet, the same process is not as simple.
I was thinking of getting a big strainer, maybe.
Thank you IM

Popcorn seems to be the choice of grain for most new growers that get their start on YouTube. Corn seems like a very poor choice indeed.
Wheat is an excellent choice, millet is a smaller seed so it has a greater overall surface area and more inoculation points than other larger grains. Any standard grain will be a great choice for cultivation, preference and price will be the main considerations for grain selection as they all work well....except for corn and uncle bens, lol.
I wash my millet the same as you would wash any other grains: fill bucket with grains and water, agitate, pour off dirty water, repeat until clean.

Thanks for the response.
I think I'll go with wheat, for now. I haven't hit up the horse food supply stores around here yet and perhaps they'll have different grains for cheaper.
Millet seems like a brilliant grain for G2G. Once I get into G2G I'll try it with millet.
Yes, uncle bens and popcorn.. they are, somewhat ironically, the most expensive option when it comes to grain spawn.
The one problem I have with millet is that, despite my best efforts, it does make a bit of a mess, kind of like when using charcoal in agar.

I have some millet soaking now so will try this out.

Millet is messy, the more of a mess that you make the better you get at formulating solutions to that mess, lol.
My biggest issue is when g2g tuens into pulling millet out from between my filters pleats with long forceps.

I am running this tomorrow. I have been getting more tams running the no soak no prep since switching from rye. I will post some side by side comparisons for science!

Heck yeh millet is messy, they remind me of the BB’s my Red Rider would use when I was a wee lad. I love millet too much to switch back to oats though because millet prep is so straight forward and simple. Thanks p9hu7 for writing this thread and getting me back on millet, you’ve added years to my life.
I use brewer’s bags which are fine mesh sacks meant for grains in a brewer’s kettle, and I dump 10-20lbs of millet in one and just run it under my tub faucet while churning it around with my hands. Then once the water runs clear I dunk the millet in the bag in my soak water and go to bed, next morning I just pull it out, hang to drain, and load jars or bags right out of the sack. No more wiping a billion wet lil’ millettes up from a strainer, the floor, etc—the bag makes it so easy. Just my 2¢.
I suggest anyone who wants to stack hobbies stack cult with brewing, the equipment crossover is really convenient and your local grain store will adore you.

I use them regardless. Another cheap easy tool. I now have to admit I broke down and bought a $40 bag of millet again today lol.

I bought a 2kg bag of "budgie" seed. It contained millet, oats and wheat.
I rain it through a metal colander multiple times and threw away the grains that didn't go through the colander (approx 75% of the 2kg bag).
What remained was about 1/3 of a QT jar of small seeds.
--
The small seeds went into a quart jar of hot water, got shaken up and then dumped into a sieve to remove the water.
This process was repeated until the water in the jar was clear.
The seeds were put into the quart jar, filled with hot water and then a lid was put on.
--
~2 hours later I repeated the above process because the water had become cloudy.
The seeds had to be rinsed multiple times again to get the water to be clear.
The seeds went back into the quart jar, filled with hot water and then a lid was put on.
--
~4 hours later I repeated the same process because the water had become cloudy.
After this, they went back into the jar, hot water was added and then a lid was put on.
--
36 hours later, the water is filthy. The water is actually darker than it was after the first soak/shake.
--
I was planning on PCing the grains after a 24 hour soak but fell asleep and missed the 24 hour time frame.
They're back in a jar, soaking.
I'll see what they look like in a couple of hours and then rinse/PC them.

Thanks. After a thorough shaking the water is now clear.
The seeds haven't germinated or turned to mush so they're going in the PC
