Thanks Ora! Whew! Does soaked millet expand much more during the PC cycle? Thanks in advance!

yeah a bit, like if your aiming for 600ml line on your quart jars id probably fill at 500ml. if your using this tek id recommend soaking 16+ hrs because it can be kind of dry (at least thats why i think im getting slow colonization on straight wedge jars, LI jars doing OK)

Thanks for the heads up! I almost went for a 6 hour soak so I just thought 12-14 hrs would be a sweet spot. Are you using similar millet as I am? Maybe that's playing a factor too?

I would assume unhulled millet is the same no matter where you get it from. Other people seemed to report soaking too little ended up with stalled jars also. Probably because the pieces are so small it doesn't hold as much water so it's better to let it soak as much as it can to get that initial moisture content. I think smartattack said he soaks 16hrs.

Another question please. I'm using plastic lids. When I went to roll my millet around I noticed some stuck on the inside of the lid near the lip. I tried banging them out but I could not. Will this cause any problems if they are not colonized?
Thanks again!

Oh man millet loves to get stuck in between lids. Make sure to bang the jar after shaking so the millet falls down from the corners of the lid. I use 2 piece lids and when I forget to tap it sometimes I'll try closing after opening it and there's a piece of millet right on the lip, it's a nightmare.
Also make your GE holes a little bigger. I used nail punctures and sometimes after shaking they would fit perfectly inside the holes blocking my GE.

With the help of this thread and Ora encouraging me to soak the millet for a bit longer.
This is my results from a 17hr soak. Rolled the jars around to distribute moisture and place agar wedge below the millet.

I find longer soaks to be more better as well. I have a few clean but stalled jars laying around that were soaked less than 8hrs. No bueno. 12+ and things seem fine.

My jars above may be too dry. Maybe loading them with less drying time would of been better.
Seems like the mycelium is just clumping around the wedge.
How's everyone else's jars moving along?

It seems minimum drying is key. My best millet jars are the ones that look like garbage fresh out of the pc, nearly pooling at the bottom. The point that is soaks in later is def true.

Thanks Smartz I made one jar on the fly with cracks tek and it came out clumpy and pretty mushy.
I shook it hard like a maracas trying to break the clumps and I thought the mycelium would never recover.
Guess what. It kinda took off.

Sounds like a TaaaaD too wet. Like everything in mush, there I this magical just right point. I pull my strainer bag out and drain till it's just a few drops, then plop it on a towel and roll the whole bag around for a minute then immediately load. It's not like a slurry, but they definitely don't roll freely either.

I had alot of trial and error and with Milo definitely doesn't hydrate well with just a cold soak. I usually prep Milo and millet with hot water from the tap and soak about 18 hours. Seems to absorb the water alot better then a cold soak. Corn even works with that method as long you use boiling hot water to soak overnight.

My attempt with cracks tek definitely came out too wet. That was due to me not being able to raise my jars high out of the water.
Thanks for the tips Smartz and BM. I will definitely utilize something different for the next run
