CPU & Motherboard & GPU Temps ???

Hello guys.
I've done a bit of searching on the web for info on the subject of safe temps for the main pc components, and have some idea. I just thought I'd ask you on this site what you know on the matter please.
Btw, all temps are in Celsius.
So far, I understand that a CPU's safe range is anywhere up to around 80 - 90 degrees and that anything over is reaching too hot temps, but what about motherboards? Can they get super hot like 80 degrees or not? At the moment, the highest I've seen my MB temp go is around 44 degrees. Anyone know how hot a MB can go, but still be running safely? Also, I understand that GPU's are similar to CPU's as far as the safe max temps they can get up to (80-90 degrees or slightly higher).
Lastly, in my bios I can set my pc case fans to run off the temp of the Motherboard or the CPU, which is the better choice?
Thanks.

Modern CPUs will throttle when their temps are too high, to prevent damage. The motherboard can handle temperatures as high as the CPU. 30 - 60 is perfectly normal. But higher sustained temps (90) will lessen the lifetime of your components. Your CPU fan should be reading from the CPU, and so your case fans should be reading from the motherboard.

Lower temps are generally better, evidently. Especially capacitors will see a shortened lifetime at higher temperatures, especially above 50C or so. But they may still outlive the economic/useful lifetime of the computer, so it's generally not a huge concern. Another issue is that inductors (used for power conditioning on both mainboard and gpu) create at higher temperatures, causing inefficiencies and ultimately component breakdown. Again, this is usually not an issue up to about 60C as large design margins are usually applied for this reason (typically at least 2x for inductors). The same is true for ceramic capacitors, which are omnipresent. The semiconductors themselves usually function fine up to about 80-90C case temperature; actual die/chip temperatures need to remain below 105C usually.
Long story short - it's best to keep the temperature of components such as mainboard etc limited to 50C max, but it's ok to see cpu/you etc temps rise significantly above this. Temperatures of 80-90C are generally no big concern for those components. But of course decent measures must be taken to take the heat from semiconductors away from the case as otherwise the rest of the components obviously will also ultimately heat up.
In the end the question pretty much boils down to how long you want the equipment to last. If it's only 2 years or so, higher temperatures are ok, but if you want your machine to last 5-7 years, it's important to keep the case somewhat cooler along the guidelines I indicated above.

Thank you Primal Matter and koraks for your posts .
I just played Borderlands 3 at 4k max settings for around 2 hours and these are the max temps that my PC reached.
CPU 75'C (167'F) Motherboard 54'C (129'F) GPU 70'C (158'F)
Thankfully their in the safe temp range but I might play around with the fan speeds in the bios and see if I can get them down a bit. Also, it's a relatively warm day (25'C).
One thing I'm glad I did was recently replace the rear case fan as the one I was using before came with the case and could only go 1000 rpm max. By changing to a 2000 rpm fan, the heat now expels much better (under load). In fact, with the old standard fan I would notice heat coming out of the top vent when playing BL3, but now all the heat is removed by the faster rear case fan. I just wish I could change the speed of the 2 front fans, but unfortunately they don't come up in the bios (not sure how to fix this as I did not build my computer).
Thanks again Primal Matter and koraks for your warm help. You guys are cool .

You're welcome, and your temperatures sound normal/good to me.

There are dedicated fan controllers you could use. Your motherboard basically has a couple integrated ones, but the number is usually limited to 3 or so. Currently those fans are probably simply hooked up to +12V, which means they'll run at full speed with no control. If you're not bothered by the noise, you might as well keep it this way.

Cool, thanks
I was wanting to make my front fans go faster but according to the shop where I got the computer from, they're only 1000 rpm ones and yes, there connected straight to the power supply. I would prefer having faster fans in the front for better air flow, but because it would mean taking the computer back to the shop I'm not gonna worry about it. Since my last post, I added a 80 millimeter fan (couldn't go bigger, not enough room) to the side panel and after messing with the fan speed in the bios (I'm still fine tuning), I've seen a drop of temps across the Motherboard, CPU and the GPU of around 2 to 5 degrees (under load).
The cool thing about the new 80 millimeter fan is that it's in line with (and close to) my gpu's heat-sinks, so when I'm pushing the computer with 4k gaming the air coming out of the side panel is nice and hot. I'm happy with that, as that heat isn't staying in the case warming up other components. I will eventually change the two front fans to 2000 rpm ones, but for now I'm happy as things are.
Thanks again for your help.
Now, it's time to get back into Borderlands 3

I baby my components and keep all temps below 65c
Having PC components consistently around 90c will likely lower their lifespan
Use the software for setting speeds of fans and crank them all to the same rpm if you are doing very intensive tasks
