I like lotkids design, mine may be overbuilt except I didn't add that 1/4" screen  under my fine aluminum mesh, but I may add that to V2.0 . The top trim is 2" thick and I like to spread my oats thin. I'll consider drying them in thick layers during the winter, but I may just set em up in the garage with a fan for. I have 200lb oats, 150lb milo, 100lb wheat, and 50lb rye. I also have several dozen quarts of melmac spawn plus 3 bottles of melmac LC. Should be busy enough for the month.

Yup yup yuppp! I been using old door screens layed atop miscellaneous old pallets manually agitating nearly all day. With my DIY screen rack I'm hoping the increased airflow oughta save hours at least. If I buy a couple AA75X next then I can really crush some sacks o cereal in jiffy. 2 AA75X and a bubba barrel would be convenient.

I've given up on "properly" drying oats.
Once they're hydrated I drain, spread them out on my big drying screen, sprinkle a few qts of vermiculite, mix it all up, and just start filling bags while the grains are still steaming.

The verm sucks up surface moisture from the grain.
Having a bunch of partly hydrated vermiculite in the bags allows me to pour a lot of LC without worrying about it being too wet.
And there are more inoculation points when it's time to spawn.

I stopped drying oats. Just let them steam off in a strainer and throw em in jars.

I'm in the same boat. Trying to figure out a more efficient drying method. I'm gonna buy a cement mixer and a propane/electric hot air blower. After I boil and rinse I'm gonna load into the mixer and point the blower into it. Turn both of them on and time how long it takes to get it dry enough to load into the jars. This should keep my house a lot cleaner.

I cook 50# bags in a brew kettle then just drain and lay out on a 5'x2' screen to dry (made of 2"x6" so it has room). takes less than 1 hour to be loading into bags from there.

yeah it's not like it's rocket science or hard to dial in lol. but i've been suprised at how well mine dry when thick, but i live ina  cold climate and I get poor results if they aren't thick enough. i wish I had made mine out of pressure treated wood like LK recommended as mine is already getting some mold (less than 8 months old), but I have to keep mine outdoors exposed to rain. i also siliconed my seals after using it as grain got in all the cracks otherwise and take forever to get out, especially millet.

when I do my v2.0 I'm doing PT and adding a support or two in the middle, it's started to sag a bit already but I do'nt use the third saw horse like LK. getting a proper strainer and kettle is a big time game changer though, i don't miss cooking 10qts of grain at a time and using sink strainers lol.

I'll be posting in your grow along thread once they hit grain! I'm super pumped for the big macs, I'll be running them in pasty style ezdials.

I dont have space for something like that. I've been using the island in my kitchen and I'm always cleaning up seeds that spill. The cement mixer should allow me to move all of my grain prep outdoors and it will be multi purpose so that's a bonus.

Ghetto pre filter made of an old shirt:

Next: Clean up that transformer/triac mess and replace it with a variac (for controlling motor speed). Make a protective grille for the HEPA.

Nothing really new but my sous vide thermostat took a crap and I had been needing a solution to do a higher volume of casing in one go anyways so I put together a cooler pasteurizer.

I can fit 6 half gallon jars of casing at a time which works out to around 8 tubs. Not enough but I already had this cooler so I wanted to make sure it worked before buying something bigger. So far it works perfect but I did discover that the little water pump I'm using for circulation is only rated for 95 degrees so I'll probably have to replace that.

I do my grain prep outdoor too. I assumed if you had space for a cement mixer you'd have space for a strainer. just wanted to throw my $0.02 out there before you commit to it

For sure. I'm already getting the mixer because it will be used for my fence posts, compost, and as a brass tumbler. Lol I figured may as well use it for something else to.

sick deal at wally mart, snagged a broken mini shoebox for $0.50. Also got some out-of-season jars that I can't find ANYWHERE

also 500 celltreat grip ringers ready to go. my last agar session was less than 4% contamination(down from over 50% when I started), so i figured I'd reward myself:laugh:
