This is all very exciting. Hoping this La Niña weather pattern doesn’t affect the upcoming season too much.

I anticipate in the drier parts of the South Island this year will be a poor season, but if they hunt out wetter areas, including microclimates, they might surprise themselves. Psilocybe semilanceata is likely to appear later than normal but might just fruit in to spring. We'll only know if people don't assume it's over and just give up, which in my experience is what 99% of people do some time before things actually stop.

In the north we can expect it to be a bumper season that may be enjoyed by humans and pathogens alike. While overall it is positive, the wet summer and possible warm summer could well have casualties in excess of what is normal as the organisms responsible are not knocked back by cold or dry conditions.

I wonder how long it's gonna take me to figure out who everyone is. It seems that we all have different user names here than we do on FB (if indeed we are on there).

Someone go out there and find some cinctulus! It's one of the 5 actives I believe I've seen fruiting so far this year

Haha yeah thought so. Good to have someone of your calibre to offset the newbies like me.
I know angulospora pot shots aren't everyone's thing but.... pretty happy, having my best flush so far.

Can't get them in a good shot but there are another 9 coming out the drain holes.
My only complaint is that they are a bit bog standard, maybe not weird enough for the dumbass group.

I wonder why you think later than normal.

Went for a wander here in Tas today.  nice sheltered valley, lots of ganoderma putting on growth, and a few small mushrooms.

The dews are definitely happening, so I would expect a good early Psilocybe subaeruginosa season.  I would also expect an early Psilocybe semilanceata season, just need to get some cooler overnight temps but the way it feels here in Tasmania, it's a cool February this year so good news for those out hunting early.

RTR gets bent outta shape when peeps post ID’s in this thread. . . Mods suggest no actual locations are allowed to be posted. . .

If you are visiting forests, ya hardly need a fan. . . Those things dry out as you look at them. . .

And in case your are wondering, i’m only commenting because I’m deeply jealous of your finds. . . How dare you find actives in AKL in summer. . !

Doing better than my angulospora pot plant. So far the only fruitbodies it has produced since the one that was there when I bought it have been some modest flushes of trichoderma. I would be super happy with your flush!

But you can definitely get away with posting those ones in dumbass angulosporas. They look nothing like the ones from deep in their natural wilderness roadside ditch habitat.

'I wonder why you think later than normal.'

It would appear that the areas on New Zealand known best for Psilocybe semilanceata can expect a warmer and drier winter.

So based on this I speculate they will get less snow, frost and heavy rainfall events which all appear to limit the species enthusiasm to continue fruiting.

Although parts may get too dry, we are talking about NZ in winter so I do not expect 'drier than normal' to mean particularly dry overall.

Quite possibly I'm wrong on a variety of levels. My research was based on information published by official experts in the affect of La Nina on NZ, but I just scanned over it in a minute or less to get a rough idea.

I really hope it will be an early season in my hood!

''I might have taken a motorbike battery deep in to CENSORED to get a fan on some 100% gourmet choice edibles ASAP''

Chur, I've edited it now!

'RTR gets bent outta shape when peeps post ID’s in this thread. . .'

I'll just post photos but not name them but act like I know. Then I wait for someone else to ask what it is, but I'll pretend I never aw that and keep waiting until someone else ID's it for me.

The fan didn't even work that well! This year I think maybe save the batteries for other things and bring a tent for an SAB for prints, and maybe another tent to sleep in and a desiccation chamber. I still want to get some aucklandiae to dry with more original colour and without those pesky white fibrils from getting lost like my bag I put down somewhere with those dried subsecos, roll of tinfoil and other essential bushwalk supplies.

As for Auckland actives how much have you looked in summer? It's just rained heaps. Get to ya local weraroa spot and have a look!

Dropping down to 13 over night the next 2 nights with more rain on the way.... is it worth the 40min drive followed by 40min hike to the only spot I've found a single wereroa....

The day I found the weraroa recently had a high of 24 and a low of 17 I think. The week prior the extremes were I think 16 - 27.

Take from that what you wish.

Just remember that if the conditions are right there are several active species that may fruit in NZ at any time of year so don't just look out for weraroa.

Gymnopilus purpuratus
Gymnopilus species active

Panaeolus cinctulus
Panaeolus olivaceus
'Panaeolopsis' sp*

Psilocybe angulospora
Psilocybe tasmaniana
Psilocybe weraroa

Pluteus velutinornatus

Look out for this list any time of year that the conditions are Ka Pai.

The list is longer in Autumn, winter and spring, this is just the summer list.

*Not a real genus according to Alan R. Just some Panaeolus larping as secos.

It would mean that the fungus species that get called genus Panaeolopsis have no variation from genus Panaeolus that is significant enough to justify another genus.

Since Panaeolus is I assume the OG (Original Genus) then it would be Panaeolus nirimbii ect,

Currently under debate there is very little research into them. A good experiment would be to grow the spores or tissue clone and see if they exhibit the sectoid properties

Yes the genus is under question. These active Pan. cinctulus were Jan 2021, cms away from the Panaeolopsis (which microscopically don't look to be nirimbii, maybe ClientParking find a new species. They are hefty ones).

They look very chode like. Short and stout. Thick stipe and small pileus.
I don't think I have ever seen images of Panaeolus cinctulus with such thick stipes...

Panaeolus and Panaeolopsis should be kept as separate genera because they obviously differ in macroscopic features.
