Ongoing Musician Thread: ANY relevant topic is welcomed

All skill levels welcome. I just wanted a thread to gather a following of music minded people so we have a place to discuss our musical ideas, share our work, maybe even work together. Whether its telling us all about an exotic instrument you just learned about, or sharing a track you recorded, or you're seeking advice about DAW's, speaker builds, hardware/electronics, instrument building, collaborating on songs. Anything
Now how to get the ball rolling. The thing on my mind is maybe newcomers should tell us about an unusual instrument you like the sound of, ideally posting a video link alongside. Or post a free/$ VST you like. Or failing that, some tidbit of general advice, your philosophy on music, anything to try to help me get the snowball rolling.
I'll start: I just discovered the shehnai today, very unique sound to it. I've been trying off and on to find a quality one to purchase online but have come up empty so far. I'm just trying ebay, amazon, even etsy, if somebody knows a good place to get exotic instruments that'd be grand.
Here's a shehnai video
Someone in WCA also pointed out the hang drum to me, also very unique
I've always been curious about getting a guitar synthesizer, anybody happen to have experience with those?
Also I was recently given a didgeridoo and am curious what the best way to connect it to effects would be. Could I simply install a pickup, or would it be best to just play into a mic thats fed through effects? I don't really know how pickups work

Also, I've been too lazy to actually go through with this but I found a video of a guy using a rockband drumset as an electronic drumset. Most other methods of accomplishing this I've seen involved modifying the hardware in needlessly expensive ways, but all this guy did was plug the usb cord into his computer and then use some software that interprets gaming controller commands and used that to map certain sounds to certain pads.
I mean they are essentially electronic drumsets right out of the box, they've got a proper housing and piezoelectric sensors inside, plus the kickpedal. I wonder if one could attach a second rockband kickpedal to a drumset so it could serve as a hi-hat pedal.
And even if you wanted to make electronic drums from scratch, it seems your main hurdle is the housing/playing surface. Beyond that its just cheap piezoelectric sensors and some wiring. The crafty could save a bundle, and you gain a more intimate knowledge when you make the instrument yourself.

Here's some of my creations, I'm particularly proud of this one
Ambient Synth Korg Monologue in A minor
I own a Lyra 8 Organismic synth, its unlike any other synth out there. It's very cool.
unfortunately a lot of my recording equipment is not available currently and my Ableton push is broken I will have to work with what I have despite no recording equipment for now:( Also I sold my Arturia Drum Machine cuz I was so fucking broke I needed the money
Here's some other stuff
Monologue, Drumbrute, Volca Sample.....III kd&^%}˜©ˆ <I really like this jam!
Aphendix Tracer [Korg Monologue Korg Volca Sample Arturia Drumbrute]
Into spirals - SOMA Labs Lyra 8 Korg Monologue Arturia Drumbrute
Axis Disappearing [Arturia Drumbrute + Korg Monologue + Lyra 8]
SOMA Labs Lyra 8 and Korg KP3 Semblance of a Shadow
Arturia Drumbrute Korg Monologue Korg Volca Sample Procrastinating Genetics Analog Synth Jam
Drumbrute, Monologue, Volca Sample Jam #2
Mask Media [Arturia Drumbrute + Korg Monologue]
Anyways, sorry if I spammed too much content but after a few years I think I like what I did. Inspired to make more stuff

Hey killer stuff man, thanks for poppin over. By all means share what you've got.
I'd never really considered obtaining analogue synths since I got my midi keyboard but you clearly like them. Are there advantages/disadvantages between digital/analogue synths?
I'm currently polishing up a death grips cover I recorded a while back, I'll have to post it here when I'm done.

Big death grips fan here too, Saw them live in Toronto years ago w a friend (RIP Kevan) <Audio quality is ass but its an important memory for me
Yea I do like my analog equipment, I found Ableton to sound kind of stale sometimes and found the infinity of possibilities to be a hinderance. I like physical hardware because it constrains you and its right there in your hands 've found the more limitations you have the more creative you can get trying to work around them
That being said I mix up digital instruments with analog ones, its really just a matter of preference.
I made this song on an iPad
Cinco on my Six
Spirit
I wrote this song for my friend who passed away, he lives on in that death grips concert video I linked

Fuckin awesome man, I really like that. The world can always use some more heavy sounds
I am trying to work my way through my first real song right now. Using garageband with LABS software with a MPK mini and a cheap podcast-style microphone. I have an electronic drum set and some guitars with an audio interface but I have been having trouble getting my interface to work the way I want it to.
I've been learning music theory for the past year or so and am now at a point where I feel more comfortable with trying to piece together an actual composition
Anyways, wanted to just say it's awesome hearing yalls music and I look forward to posting some finished stuff here very soon..!!

What's up guys, funny you should mention strange instruments. I've got tons of them, mostly stringed stuff, but plenty of other things too.
So, my wife and I are doing valentines day tomorrow. And the reason we met was her band was playing at a bar and I dug it so I stuck around till the end and left. (Then she chased me outside, got my number, and I ignored her for 2 months lol..)
But so my dad also a musician gave her this instrument called a lap dulcimer (just cuz he has hundreds of instruments laying around too and she thought it looked cool.) So I just put some fresh strings on it and am gonna show her how to play some stuff tomorrow as a valentines surprise. I might play a little mandolin with her.
Here's a video of a dude playing "whiskey before breakfast" a song I always liked the title of haha

love the dulcimer, and the meet cute story. All the bluegrass instruments are calling to me lately
Can't figure out how to play my new shehnai. Couldn't find 'how to' videos specific to it so figured clarinet was closest.
Trying to put the finishing touches on Beware atm but recording vocals can be rather frustrating, I'm so close but just can't get it right

First time doing vocals so it aint perfect, I got sick of trying to perfect it, recording the same lines over and over and over.
This was a lot of fun to make, now time to focus on some originals

Hey sounds good man! I totally get you on the vocals. I have been the guy on an instrument behind the scenes for 20 years and just decided to make an album. I only took one solo on electric guitar on the whole thing, 9 songs, just all singing songs stuff, which I've never done. And man, vocals, jesus christ. Singing is so hard! But I wouldn't have known you were having trouble with them. I'll post something of mine new thing once I get the mixes done.
What's your original stuff like?

Well thanks, I must say that surprises me, maybe I've been overly critical of myself. I just know if I got the right emotion behind each line it would be so much better.
As far as originals, I did most of my music making when I was 16 so those songs were largely trash. I've just recently decided this is something I really want to do and rededicated to it
The only other current song I have should be accessible from that soundcloud link i posted. Another quasi disappointment, I lovedd the vibe I got going for the song, (akin to controlled bleeding which is one of my main influences,) but I could never figure out where to go with it. Needs some opera style singing probably
I'm really getting into Fl Studio right now so maybe I'll have some new stuff soon, juices are finally flowin

Okay so here is a rough idea of how my first song is gonna go. **edited for privacy*******
This has a lot of work left to be done on it and it's pretty poppy but this is a decent peek at it. Gonna add lyrics, tune up the melody, freshen up the noises, add some more complexity blah blah blah
It also needs to be mastered once it's all finished and I have no friggin clue how that'll go, it sounds unpolished and unless I play it through decent speakers I cant really hear the bass well (need to redo the bass anyway) but I'm pretty happy so far given it's my first real whack at it. I'm trying to keep it simple and not get too wrapped up in unnecessary stuff for this song.
Quote:
RamJam said: What interface are you using Psicomv?
Hey Ram, I use a Scarlett 2i2 (2 input 2 output). I am still in the baby stages of figuring it out but it's fun
Here's my set up. A little bit of this and a little bit of that haha. A Roland electronic drum kit, two analog synths (korg volca keys / volca bass), an mpk mini, a Blue microphone I got from Best Buy, and my guitar (plus a cheap Chinese Breedlove acoustic guitar which I love dearly). I can hook the drum kit to GarageBand via USB really easily and the microphone plugs in USB as well. Easy as pie I'm into it

I've been carrying guitars around with me for like 10 years but had no idea how to play the whole time but a little over a year ago I started taking guitar/music theory lessons from a dude in the area and it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made It took me like 6 months to really get into it and comprehend it but I'm really fuckin glad I did. Picked the drums back up again too after many years off and that has been nice. GarageBand doesn't pick up my cymbals except the ride (hi-hat works 75% of the time but that still just leads to frustrating moments of random silence while playing).

Yo that's dope and you got a nice little set up! Ya, I been luggin around too many guitars for too many years. I just sold 10 of them last year. I want to start playing drums. I've been wanting to for years just never did when I actually could have. But maybe one of those electronic kits is the answer.

I just found a CD from some shit I did on 2004. I think I'm gonna get a CD player so I can hear wtf I was doing back then lol. But it's nice to have copies of what was going on your head over the years. I love having shit recorded to listen to later on.

sup fellas, thought I would drop in and post this dude. Pan flute was my first instrument as a kid. I found this guy when I was in high school and this thread just reminded me about him. He's quite a player. This was the first tune of his I figured out. Also, this album was on repeat for one of my first acid trips. Actually I guess that means I found him before high school hahaha cheers

Goddd I love this song. Its a song structure I've always thought about using, having a spoken word part thats explaining something interesting/meaningful.
I've been writing one in my head for ages about my disillusionment with sound as an art form after getting really into Jungian psychology/symbolic meanings of images. I started to think music when compared to visual art was just a bunch of noises that sounded cool, devoid of real meaning. And then talk about my subsequent rediscovery of the unique uses/powers of sound art, how they can both be equally transformative in their own ways
And another one more about how to get the most out of a concert and trying to behave in a way that makes it more fun for those around you, trying to get a creative group vibe going
Also I'm very tickled that this thread has gotten off the runway, thanks for helping make it happen fellow knob twiddlers

Wanting to buy a new microphone as I've just got a cheapo mic. Was leaning condenser but what I'm reading makes them sound incredibly easy to break just by bumping it. I'm too clumsy, going dynamic mic if condensers are really that fragile.
Any advice on buying mics? Willing to spend around 300 max, figure I might as well get a nice model right off the bat. Reading about what all the specs mean and such atm
Would also be nice to get a mic for field recordings but I know even less about whats appropriate for that. I love foley samples. I'd be so stoked if I could get a good recording of the owls in mating season, they make some incredible unique calls during those months.
edit: I'm leaning for a zoom h5, too sleep deprived to decide if its overkill or not.

That's interesting. Very interesting structure indeed. I've never cared for lyrics mush and always felt like lyrics are how non-musical people connect with music. But this goes so far that direction it does make it cool.
Do you have the written material and just looking for the right track to put it on?

Oh shit idk how I missed that other song philospher! I dig what you did with that kick there. I can't turn up my sub and monitors rn cuz it's to late. was that a splice sound or did you make that?
And somehow missed that mic post. I have no idea how to record shit outside. My experience with those handheld things is that they are better than you'd think. But not necessarily as good as you would want. What I always tell people when they want a good mic in the 300 range is the sm7. But that's not for outdoors at all...

thanks for all the input ramjam, you're a standup dude. Even though you were complimenting my kick it made me listen to it again and decide it sounded shitty. So I made a new song with the same drums/kick but different synths and it sounded way better. So thanks for inspiring that. Though its not a post worthy song yet
A little embarrassed to say I don't know what a splice is. Its just the FPC vst in FL studio with a sample I put a delay effect on.
Sm7 was what I was leaning for. Tempted to say fuck research and just order it, seems like the standard mic recommendation from what I've seen around the web. I really must get a field mic too though. You know when a piece of art just brings you to tears? Most music doesn't do that for me, but a truly beautiful birdcall really does, thats the thing I most want to record. Once a swan at a park emitted a most beautiful call and an old ex imitated it in a most obnoxious fashion, god I was SO mad she ruined that moment.
Can't speak to saturation Syle but I'm pleased to see people getting in the mix here.
Quote:
I've never cared for lyrics mush and always felt like lyrics are how non-musical people connect with music
I feel the same way. I'm a very non verbal person. Usually I don't even notice the lyrics in music unless someone points them out to me. As a result I tend to enjoy songs that use gibberish vocals, or better yet songs that use foreign languages.
Thats something that seems strangely underused in music to me, foreign languages, accents, etc. Particularly french is something I want to use in my music at some point. I've taken a liking to french music lately, their language is truly beautiful.
I don't have that particular song written down but its in my head. I've got some genuine inspiration building up inside me, this weekend I think I'm going to give it my all and record a real song. I even wrote some unrelated original lyrics recently, they just popped into my head while I was listening to instrumental spotify but I've been editing them and liking whats coming out.
Its mostly too raw to post but here are some choice lines:
Quote:
Lost on the ocean-navigating by stars A message from the heavens can you call it true art
Vision from a dream I knew Desperate to be set loose.
Come sit Shiva for a dream, or help create the real thing
Pantomime, testify, bring heaven to earth tonight.
(I'm sure my first songwriting attempt is as cringe-worthy as the next but its the first step and personally I'm happy with it for now )

Man, that guy is an excellent guqin player. I lived over that side of the world for a while and got decent at erhu and pipa. I love their sense of melody.
but ya nah man I like the lyrics, just depends if they sing right for the melody and timing. I can totally see them working. Doesn't matter what people think long as you like them anyway.
Is that band lab thing for finding people to colab with or colabing with poeple you know? All these new platforms man. Sheesh! I usually just create a shared dropbox folder and open the session file from there so changes just are in there automatically. It's a minor headache if both people want to be working at the same time. But not insurmountable. or if you're in different daws just leave the stems in there, or a stereo dump, just depends on the nature of the thing.

I tried to get people into building stuff for a while. Like do one thing, then other person adds 1 thing, etc and let it build. No one ever ended up wanting to go very far with that kind of workflow though

You get.out of Band lab what you put in. I did a few tracks for people yesterday , next thing I know... My request are blowing up Example , this track was just sitting there waiting on some gravy. https://www.bandlab.com/post/5ba4fb2b-4584-eb11-9889-0050f28a50ba
I added a little melody line to it and almost immediately I get 5-6 people interested in what I have to offer. If you give , you will get. If you all have any questions about BL. Hit me.up.

Ok cool. Ya so he uploaded the little finger picked guitar. And you just were surfing the site and found it, added a lead over it, and that posts to like your homepage or is linked from his page now too? and now people are asking you to play on their songs now too cuz they heard it on your page? Like they have tracks on there that they are like "hey can you add something to this?" does any money change hands anywhere in this? Or is it all free all around? Or do some people charge to play on stuff for people? This is an interesting platform. Pretty cool what it opens up.

I am still pretty new at bandlab as far as mixing it up with other people. While no monies have come my way and I in no way would try and manage my bills from bandlab, I do remember hearing about a site where you can purchase tailor made tracks. I just record from a phone and the sound quality just isnt there.

Cool, well, just finished my BGVs for my album. Now just a few little finishing touches here and there, just some fills and pads really, and it's all ready to be mixed. I'm having a buddy do it who is very good, but also very busy. So since he's doing it as a favor it might be a few months. BUT I am excited, and will post some stuff once I get it, hopefully you guys don't shit all over it hahaha

I never shit on the art of budding artists.
Had a friend show me some of his music once and in a way it was some of the shittiest music I've ever heard, but somehow its shittyness made it truly awesome. Go loud and proud brother

Post some samples , Ram Jam. It takes intestinal fortitude to put your self out there in a song. Thats something to proud of.. Not criticized.

Maybe they'll make a resurgence like vinyl, though? I feel like digital can only go so far. the sound of someone talented working an old moog synthesizer beats the fuck out of a bedroom produced song made with a DAW. The thing, though, is using computers is such an easier process for recording and composing an actual song, especially if you're making music alone
I've been looping some cool stuff on my analog synths and then playing guitar/drums/etc over it I'll get around to recording and posting something here this week, just a clip of messing around
I saw faustian talking about how digital just seems to have too many things to choose from to hone down a sound they like and I can relate to that. Working with an analog synth is much more my jam too

Working on a technical death metal project with Marco Pitruzella, if anyone is familiar with that legend.
Hoping for a summer 2022 EP release (3-5 songs, maybe a cover).

i've just released my first EP which is not psychedelic PER SE, however, it features haunting, sinister, and ominous elements... sounds and emotions which a daring psychonaut would be interested to explore:

"We are still speaking of a point of disappearance, a vanishing point, but this time in music. I shall call this the stereophonic effect. We are all obsessed with high fidelity, with the quality of musical "reproduction." At the consoles of our stereos, armed with out tuners, amplifiers and speakers, we mix, adjust settings, multiply tracks, in pursuit of a flawless sound. Is this still music? Where is the high fidelity threshold beyond which music disappears as such? It does not disappear for lack of music, but because it has passed this limit point; it disappears into the perfection of its materiality, into its own special effect. Beyond this point, there is neither judgment nor aesthetic pleasure. It is the ecstasy of musicality, and its end. The disappearance of history is of the same order: here again, we have passed that limit where, by dint of the sophistication of events and information, history ceases to exist as such." - Jean Baudrillard, The Illusion Of The End
"In the last eighteen years, I was trying to record, but I'm realizing more and more that music is not an audio experience, it's something more than audio. And the digital technique actually showed me this. It so clearly transmits the sounds, that you can't hear the music anymore. [...] From the very beginning of the digital recording, I had a problem in the studio. Because I had too many informations concerning the sound, and music is not sound. We are using the sound for creating music, but music is actually more, organizing people's emotions in time. And it's more the time flow, it's more the story you are telling using the sound. Going by more and more perfect sound, you are not necessarily achieving a better story or are able better to tell the story. Because there will be a lot of factors which will start to disturb the listener. The perfection of sound, which is kind of over-exposing itself. And on top of this, I would say there is a very interesting function of the distortion in the audience. We always have some distortion. In the concert hall, we have tremendous distortion. There is never a total silence in the concert hall. So there is a basic hum, basic level of distortion, which is something we can lean at, we can play with. And if you look at old recordings - for example, I had a beautiful recording, preludes, Chopin preludes by Cortot. The man is really playing with these distortions. He is really diving under it. Sometimes does not play half of the notes, and that I only realized after someone gave me a cleaned version of this recording. It's awful, absolutely awful. And this man gave it with a great satisfaction, said, look how he's cheating with the left hand, he doesn't play most of the notes. I said, well, this is terrible, because for this media he recorded it for, it did not matter, so this man had an intelligence of playing that what was important, and hitting exactly that region in which he could transmit his art to the listener, not bothering about all the other things which were unimportant. And now, cleaning this recording is like going to the Louvre and undressing the Mona Lisa, and realizing that she does not have very clean pants this day! This is unfair because the picture is about her smile, not about her underwear - and that's exactly what digital technique did to us." - Krystian Zimmerman, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6PpDQ6miBg
