Wanting to buy a new microphone as I've just got a cheapo mic. Was leaning condenser but what I'm reading makes them sound incredibly easy to break just by bumping it. I'm too clumsy, going dynamic mic if condensers are really that fragile.

Any advice on buying mics? Willing to spend around 300 max, figure I might as well get a nice model right off the bat. Reading about what all the specs mean and such atm

Would also be nice to get a mic for field recordings but I know even less about whats appropriate for that. I love foley samples. I'd be so stoked if I could get a good recording of the owls in mating season, they make some incredible unique calls during those months.

edit: I'm leaning for a zoom h5, too sleep deprived to decide if its overkill or not.

That's interesting. Very interesting structure indeed. I've never cared for lyrics mush and always felt like lyrics are how non-musical people connect with music. But this goes so far that direction it does make it cool.

Do you have the written material and just looking for the right track to put it on?

Anyone have experience using saturation on the mixing/mastering bus? I think I’m gonna try that on a future mix of mine...

Any recs for some good saturation plugins?

I like the decapitator from sound toys. don't think I've ever used it on a whole mix though. Feel like it would need to be dialed pretty light for that, but idk, post how it turns out!

Oh shit idk how I missed that other song philospher! I dig what you did with that kick there.  I can't turn up my sub and monitors rn cuz it's to late.  was that a splice sound or did you make that?

And somehow missed that mic post. I have no idea how to record shit outside.  My experience with those handheld things is that they are better than you'd think.  But not necessarily as good as you would want. What I always tell people when they want a good mic in the 300 range is the sm7. But that's not for outdoors at all...

thanks for all the input ramjam, you're a standup dude. Even though you were complimenting my kick it made me listen to it again and decide it sounded shitty. So I made a new song with the same drums/kick but different synths and it sounded way better. So thanks for inspiring that. Though its not a post worthy song yet

A little embarrassed to say I don't know what a splice is. Its just the FPC vst in FL studio with a sample I put a delay effect on.

Sm7 was what I was leaning for. Tempted to say fuck research and just order it, seems like the standard mic recommendation from what I've seen around the web. I really must get a field mic too though. You know when a piece of art just brings you to tears? Most music doesn't do that for me, but a truly beautiful birdcall really does, thats the thing I most want to record. Once a swan at a park emitted a most beautiful call and an old ex imitated it in a most obnoxious fashion, god I was SO mad she ruined that moment.

Can't speak to saturation Syle but I'm pleased to see people getting in the mix here.

Quote:

I feel the same way. I'm a very non verbal person. Usually I don't even notice the lyrics in music unless someone points them out to me. As a result I tend to enjoy songs that use gibberish vocals, or better yet songs that use foreign languages.

Thats something that seems strangely underused in music to me, foreign languages, accents, etc. Particularly french is something I want to use in my music at some point. I've taken a liking to french music lately, their language is truly beautiful.

I don't have that particular song written down but its in my head. I've got some genuine inspiration building up inside me, this weekend I think I'm going to give it my all and record a real song. I even wrote some unrelated original lyrics recently, they just popped into my head while I was listening to instrumental spotify but I've been editing them and liking whats coming out.

Its mostly too raw to post but here are some choice lines:

Quote:

Lost on the ocean-navigating by stars
A message from the heavens can you call it true art

Vision from a dream I knew
Desperate to be set loose.

Come sit Shiva for a dream, or help create the real thing

Pantomime, testify, bring heaven to earth tonight.

(I'm sure my first songwriting attempt is as cringe-worthy as the next but its the first step and personally I'm happy with it for now )

Man, that guy is an excellent guqin player.  I lived over that side of the world for a while and got decent at erhu and pipa. I love their sense of melody.

but ya nah man I like the lyrics, just depends if they sing right for the melody and timing. I can totally see them working. Doesn't matter what people think long as you like them anyway.

Is that band lab thing for finding people to colab with or colabing with poeple you know?  All these new platforms man. Sheesh! I usually just create a shared dropbox folder and open the session file from there so changes just are in there automatically. It's a minor headache if both people want to be working at the same time. But not insurmountable. or if you're in different daws just leave the stems in there, or a stereo dump, just depends on the nature of the thing.

I tried to get people into building stuff for a while. Like do one thing, then other person adds 1 thing, etc and let it build. No one ever ended up wanting to go very far with that kind of workflow though

You get.out of Band lab what you put in.  I did a few tracks for people yesterday , next thing I know... My request are blowing up

Example , this track was just sitting there waiting on some gravy.
https://www.bandlab.com/post/5ba4fb2b-4584-eb11-9889-0050f28a50ba

I added a little melody line to it and almost immediately I get 5-6 people interested in what I have to offer.
If you give , you will get.
If you all have any questions about BL. Hit me.up.

Ok cool. Ya so he uploaded the little finger picked guitar. And you just were surfing the site and found it, added a lead over it, and that posts to like your homepage or is linked from his page now too?
and now people are asking you to play on their songs now too cuz they heard it on your page? Like they have tracks on there that they are like "hey can you add something to this?"
does any money change hands anywhere in this? Or is it all free all around? Or do some people charge to play on stuff for people?
This is an interesting platform. Pretty cool what it opens up.

I am still pretty new at bandlab as far as mixing it up with other people.
While no monies have come my way and I in no way would try and manage my bills from bandlab,  I do remember hearing about a site where you can purchase tailor made tracks.
I just record from a phone and the sound quality just isnt there.

Cool, well, just finished my BGVs for my album. Now just a few little finishing touches here and there, just some fills and pads really, and it's all ready to be mixed. I'm having a buddy do it who is very good, but also very busy. So since he's doing it as a favor it might be a few months. BUT I am excited, and will post some stuff once I get it, hopefully you guys don't shit all over it hahaha

I never shit on the art of budding artists.

Had a friend show me some of his music once and in a way it was some of the shittiest music I've ever heard, but somehow its shittyness made it truly awesome. Go loud and proud brother

Post some samples , Ram Jam.  It takes intestinal fortitude to put your self out there in a song.  Thats something to proud of.. Not criticized.

Maybe they'll make a resurgence like vinyl, though? I feel like digital can only go so far. the sound of someone talented working an old moog synthesizer beats the fuck out of a bedroom produced song made with a DAW.  The thing, though, is using computers is such an easier process for recording and composing an actual song, especially if you're making music alone

I've been looping some cool stuff on my analog synths and then playing guitar/drums/etc over it :sun: I'll get around to recording and posting something here this week, just a clip of messing around

I saw faustian talking about how digital just seems to have too many things to choose from to hone down a sound they like and I can relate to that.  Working with an analog synth is much more my jam too
