Ongoing Musician Thread: ANY relevant topic is welcomed

All skill levels welcome. I just wanted a thread to gather a following of music minded people so we have a place to discuss our musical ideas, share our work, maybe even work together. Whether its telling us all about an exotic instrument you just learned about, or sharing a track you recorded, or you're seeking advice about DAW's, speaker builds, hardware/electronics, instrument building, collaborating on songs. Anything
Now how to get the ball rolling. The thing on my mind is maybe newcomers should tell us about an unusual instrument you like the sound of, ideally posting a video link alongside. Or post a free/$ VST you like. Or failing that, some tidbit of general advice, your philosophy on music, anything to try to help me get the snowball rolling.
I'll start: I just discovered the shehnai today, very unique sound to it. I've been trying off and on to find a quality one to purchase online but have come up empty so far. I'm just trying ebay, amazon, even etsy, if somebody knows a good place to get exotic instruments that'd be grand.
Here's a shehnai video
Someone in WCA also pointed out the hang drum to me, also very unique
I've always been curious about getting a guitar synthesizer, anybody happen to have experience with those?
Also I was recently given a didgeridoo and am curious what the best way to connect it to effects would be. Could I simply install a pickup, or would it be best to just play into a mic thats fed through effects? I don't really know how pickups work

Also, I've been too lazy to actually go through with this but I found a video of a guy using a rockband drumset as an electronic drumset. Most other methods of accomplishing this I've seen involved modifying the hardware in needlessly expensive ways, but all this guy did was plug the usb cord into his computer and then use some software that interprets gaming controller commands and used that to map certain sounds to certain pads.
I mean they are essentially electronic drumsets right out of the box, they've got a proper housing and piezoelectric sensors inside, plus the kickpedal. I wonder if one could attach a second rockband kickpedal to a drumset so it could serve as a hi-hat pedal.
And even if you wanted to make electronic drums from scratch, it seems your main hurdle is the housing/playing surface. Beyond that its just cheap piezoelectric sensors and some wiring. The crafty could save a bundle, and you gain a more intimate knowledge when you make the instrument yourself.

Aphendix Tracer [Korg Monologue Korg Volca Sample Arturia Drumbrute]
Into spirals - SOMA Labs Lyra 8 Korg Monologue Arturia Drumbrute
Axis Disappearing [Arturia Drumbrute + Korg Monologue + Lyra 8]

Hey killer stuff man, thanks for poppin over. By all means share what you've got.
I'd never really considered obtaining analogue synths since I got my midi keyboard but you clearly like them. Are there advantages/disadvantages between digital/analogue synths?
I'm currently polishing up a death grips cover I recorded a while back, I'll have to post it here when I'm done.

Big death grips fan here too, Saw them live in Toronto years ago w a friend (RIP Kevan) <Audio quality is ass but its an important memory for me
Yea I do like my analog equipment, I found Ableton to sound kind of stale sometimes and found the infinity of possibilities to be a hinderance. I like physical hardware because it constrains you and its right there in your hands 've found the more limitations you have the more creative you can get trying to work around them
That being said I mix up digital instruments with analog ones, its really just a matter of preference.
I made this song on an iPad
Cinco on my Six
Spirit
I wrote this song for my friend who passed away, he lives on in that death grips concert video I linked
I Saw Your Face

Fuckin awesome man, I really like that. The world can always use some more heavy sounds
I am trying to work my way through my first real song right now. Using garageband with LABS software with a MPK mini and a cheap podcast-style microphone. I have an electronic drum set and some guitars with an audio interface but I have been having trouble getting my interface to work the way I want it to.
I've been learning music theory for the past year or so and am now at a point where I feel more comfortable with trying to piece together an actual composition
Anyways, wanted to just say it's awesome hearing yalls music and I look forward to posting some finished stuff here very soon..!!

What's up guys, funny you should mention strange instruments. I've got tons of them, mostly stringed stuff, but plenty of other things too.
So, my wife and I are doing valentines day tomorrow. And the reason we met was her band was playing at a bar and I dug it so I stuck around till the end and left. (Then she chased me outside, got my number, and I ignored her for 2 months lol..)
But so my dad also a musician gave her this instrument called a lap dulcimer (just cuz he has hundreds of instruments laying around too and she thought it looked cool.) So I just put some fresh strings on it and am gonna show her how to play some stuff tomorrow as a valentines surprise. I might play a little mandolin with her.
Here's a video of a dude playing "whiskey before breakfast" a song I always liked the title of haha

love the dulcimer, and the meet cute story. All the bluegrass instruments are calling to me lately
Can't figure out how to play my new shehnai. Couldn't find 'how to' videos specific to it so figured clarinet was closest.
Trying to put the finishing touches on Beware atm but recording vocals can be rather frustrating, I'm so close but just can't get it right

Here's my Beware Cover
First time doing vocals so it aint perfect, I got sick of trying to perfect it, recording the same lines over and over and over.
This was a lot of fun to make, now time to focus on some originals

Hey sounds good man! I totally get you on the vocals. I have been the guy on an instrument behind the scenes for 20 years and just decided to make an album. I only took one solo on electric guitar on the whole thing, 9 songs, just all singing songs stuff, which I've never done. And man, vocals, jesus christ. Singing is so hard! But I wouldn't have known you were having trouble with them. I'll post something of mine new thing once I get the mixes done.
What's your original stuff like?

Well thanks, I must say that surprises me, maybe I've been overly critical of myself. I just know if I got the right emotion behind each line it would be so much better.
As far as originals, I did most of my music making when I was 16 so those songs were largely trash. I've just recently decided this is something I really want to do and rededicated to it
The only other current song I have should be accessible from that soundcloud link i posted. Another quasi disappointment, I lovedd the vibe I got going for the song, (akin to controlled bleeding which is one of my main influences,) but I could never figure out where to go with it. Needs some opera style singing probably
I'm really getting into Fl Studio right now so maybe I'll have some new stuff soon, juices are finally flowin

Okay so here is a rough idea of how my first song is gonna go. **edited for privacy*******
This has a lot of work left to be done on it and it's pretty poppy but this is a decent peek at it. Gonna add lyrics, tune up the melody, freshen up the noises, add some more complexity blah blah blah
It also needs to be mastered once it's all finished and I have no friggin clue how that'll go, it sounds unpolished and unless I play it through decent speakers I cant really hear the bass well (need to redo the bass anyway) but I'm pretty happy so far given it's my first real whack at it. I'm trying to keep it simple and not get too wrapped up in unnecessary stuff for this song.
Quote:
RamJam said: What interface are you using Psicomv?
Hey Ram, I use a Scarlett 2i2 (2 input 2 output). I am still in the baby stages of figuring it out but it's fun
Here's my set up. A little bit of this and a little bit of that haha. A Roland electronic drum kit, two analog synths (korg volca keys / volca bass), an mpk mini, a Blue microphone I got from Best Buy, and my guitar (plus a cheap Chinese Breedlove acoustic guitar which I love dearly). I can hook the drum kit to GarageBand via USB really easily and the microphone plugs in USB as well. Easy as pie I'm into it

I've been carrying guitars around with me for like 10 years but had no idea how to play the whole time but a little over a year ago I started taking guitar/music theory lessons from a dude in the area and it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made It took me like 6 months to really get into it and comprehend it but I'm really fuckin glad I did. Picked the drums back up again too after many years off and that has been nice. GarageBand doesn't pick up my cymbals except the ride (hi-hat works 75% of the time but that still just leads to frustrating moments of random silence while playing).

Yo that's dope and you got a nice little set up! Ya, I been luggin around too many guitars for too many years. I just sold 10 of them last year. I want to start playing drums. I've been wanting to for years just never did when I actually could have. But maybe one of those electronic kits is the answer.

Ya Psilosopher, FL is great for making beats. Intuitive with a simple layout. If the juices are flowing get it going man!
I just found a CD from some shit I did on 2004. I think I'm gonna get a CD player so I can hear wtf I was doing back then lol. But it's nice to have copies of what was going on your head over the years. I love having shit recorded to listen to later on.

sup fellas, thought I would drop in and post this dude. Pan flute was my first instrument as a kid. I found this guy when I was in high school and this thread just reminded me about him. He's quite a player. This was the first tune of his I figured out. Also, this album was on repeat for one of my first acid trips. Actually I guess that means I found him before high school hahaha cheers

Goddd I love this song. Its a song structure I've always thought about using, having a spoken word part thats explaining something interesting/meaningful.
I've been writing one in my head for ages about my disillusionment with sound as an art form after getting really into Jungian psychology/symbolic meanings of images. I started to think music when compared to visual art was just a bunch of noises that sounded cool, devoid of real meaning. And then talk about my subsequent rediscovery of the unique uses/powers of sound art, how they can both be equally transformative in their own ways
And another one more about how to get the most out of a concert and trying to behave in a way that makes it more fun for those around you, trying to get a creative group vibe going
Also I'm very tickled that this thread has gotten off the runway, thanks for helping make it happen fellow knob twiddlers
