Mushrooms for sleeping?
    #27078944 - 12/08/20 03:33 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Does anybody know if there are any mushrooms that help sleep? Since my brother quit amphetamines 5 months ago he can't get any restorative sleep. He can't sleep for more than 6 hours but it only feels like 1 hour to him. No REM (deep sleep)whatsoever. We tried everything including weed/oils and are waiting to see a sleep specialist but it takes too long. Being sleep deprived has numerous dangerous effects.

Did anyone hear of any shrooms that are good for that?

REM sleep is not deep sleep.
Has he tried melatonin?

You are correct. My mistake.

Yes, he tried melatonin in high and very low doses. Simply nothing works. Sleep-deprived all the time. He won't make it if we don't find some solution, fast.

There are some claims that Reishi mushrooms aid in improving sleep. But these seem to be anecdotal rather than empirical.

If you are talking about psilocybin containing mushrooms, it would seem, from my own experience, that larger doses will keep you up and thus are not an effective sleep aid. However, I have had lower doses shortly before bedtime and I felt my sleep improved on those occasions. But correlation does not infer causation and thus I don't know the extent to which the mushrooms actually improved sleep or if it was more of a "placebo" effect.

Socrates sounds like a knowledgeable MFer! I could chill with that guy! HA Anyway, the issue with his sleep is a chemical imbalance caused by methamphetamine use. I am sure you know that. Introducing more chemicals to your body only delays the bodies natural restorative properties. What your brother needs is exercise, a healthy diet and to calm his nerves (which if he is a full blown addict, his nerves are probably all corrupt with anxiety). It is a long hard road, sobriety.

So the first sentence is a bit erroneous. Our body and its various processes are chemical in nature. Adding more chemicals will not necessarily "delay" anything, depending on the chemical used and quantity. He should not introduce anything that can cause dependence (such as the common otc sleep aids which are just generic Benadryl) .

But adaptogenic herbs/substances are not habit forming, nor do they "alter" your chemical processes in a way which impedes natural balancing. Actually, adaptogens are thought to promote a rebalancing of the body by naturally aiding it. Are these claims true? I don't know. These "adaptogens" (such as ashwagandha) have been effectively used for thousands of years. So, although anecdotal, there seems to be evidence of their efficacy. And Reishi, along with most medicinal mushrooms, are thought to be adaptogenic.

I agree with the rest of what you said. A proper diet, physical and mental exercise, and patience are keys to overcoming manifestations of addiction/withdrawal symptoms/effects.

Usually it is potheads who can't sleep when they quit. Tweakers usually have no problem going to sleep once they stop tweaking. But everyone has different brain chemistry. I heard eating peanut butter helps to metabolize methamphetamine.

Have him see his doctor and find out if his doctor can give him a low dose of Seroquel like 25 or 50 mg. It is better to take sleeping pills than it is to not get enough sleep and risk becoming psychotic.

You say he has tried everything but has he tried acupuncture and Chinese herbs? You should definitely see an acupuncturist and see if it can help.

No he is not an addict. He was on maintenance dose. Pretty low too. Allergic to weed just like myself so that's out of question. He only used a lot and for a long time benzos but they don't work no more. Exercise is not possible in his state. All we are trying is diet and herbs but so far there is no help. Amphetamines did the damage. I hope it is not permanent.

I urge you to try acupuncture and Chinese herbs if they are available. Something is out of balance and acupuncture and herbs can bring everything back to harmony. Only take the herbs that are recommended by the acupuncturist. If price is an issue, look for "community" acupuncturists. Whether he was addicted or not, acupuncture has tons of indications, especially for insomnia and sleep issues.

One time I had a strong acid trip a few months ago. It was my first time doing 200 mikes and it was way intense. I was experiencing irritability after the trip. I saw my acupuncturist and told him about the trip and that I was experiencing irritability since. He's really cool and understands the psychedelic godhead and has taken psychedelics himself. I was also getting other work done as well. He did his work with the needles, and ever since then, I'm not irritable anymore and I haven't gotten irritable after an acid trip since then. I've dropped acid a few times since then but keep my doses below 150 mikes.

Have him try acupuncture. But do it more than just a couple times. Probably twice a week until the problem is gone. I've gotten acupuncture with great results from injuries, mental issues, sleep issues, back and neck issues from scoliosis, etc.

I agree on the acupuncture. It helped me a lot with my sleeping disorders while getting of benzos. I only did it a couple of times, but it was enough for me. Amazing results! And I did´nt even belive in acupuncture before I did it.

I would recommend to first cover the basics before trying microdosing. Here's a short list of sleep aids before going to harder stuff:

This all alone or combined should help.

Interested to know this myself, for very different reasons I suffer hugely with insomnia, to the same level described here.
I am currently tapering off Mirtazapine (for my own reasons), but it is often prescribed for sleep and has worked for me in the past. It's not great long term, but it enables better quality sleep than Sleeping Pills. Other options are low dose Amitriptyline, and Pregabalin.
I hate Pharmas but I know what no sleep does to you over time, it really, really fucks you up.
Good luck getting him better

No mushroom, but i want to put erythrina mulungu bark on the table.

I don't remember the dosage correctly, but what i do remember is the bark has to be in very small pieces and needs to be boiled for at least 30 minutes.
The taste of the tea is pleasant and it works really well as a sleeping aid.

Bonus: somehow the compounds stop the need for nicotine.

So, I try to get my wife wife to take microdoses for migraines and buprenorphine  withdrawal symptoms,  and sometimes she does. Usually with positive results. The other night we had a few drinks and then went to sleep. When she woke up she had a hangover headache,  so I offered a micro dose of cubensis and she accepted (I have found a relief from hangovers from microdoses). She also recently got a Fitbit which tracks heartrate and can tell you how your sleep was (time in REM sleep, deep sleep, etc...). She took a nap after taking the dose which was approximately .025-.03 of a gram. It ended up being the best sleep that she's had since getting the Fitbit. Anecdotal and not much data, but we're gonna try it again to see if it is consistent for her.

I have far better sleep with Ashwaganda, it's a adaptogen. I take pure powder about 2 to 3 grams before going to bed.
Normally I would be awake a lot because of stress and also pain can wake me up. With Ashwaganda I sleep better and wake up rested.

6 hours is not end of the world, many people sleep even less than that for a  very long time and be fine. Absence of deep sleep is a big problem and will push people in depression and make them disfunctional.

He should seek medicinal help, probbably should see psychatrist few times a month, since i believe his problem is more psychological than physiological. Maybe get prescribed sleeping pills for a month or two, to speed up the recovery process.

Good luck
