I'm not sure what the questions is but 90 mins is not sufficient imo, it should be considered the minimum threshold and not the standard.

2-2.5 hours should be the norm and is what I and others recommend for 1qt/1L grain jars. I haven't read foomans tek in quite a while but I'm sure that his method works just fine.

My recommendation would be to increase the amount of time that you vent your pc from the minimum 10 to more lile 15-20 mins as well as increasing your cycle from 90 mins to 2-2.5 hours.

Saw that advice from you in another thread (2 hrs for jars 4 hours for bags) and am upping my times going forward.  I remember there was also something about leaving millet damper than larger grains as that helps the steam penetrate the grain during the PC.  Just wondering if the same would go for WBS (in jars I assume as bags will turn to mush with the longer cook).

Originally I was just wondering what everyone thought of the jars Fooman shows on page 1 of his tek as examples of success because if those are not bacterial then I am missing something very key to determining clean spawn v. bacterial.  Would post them here but not that advanced using the message board just yet.

As an aside, would like to thank you specifically for the many excellent threads and teks.  The one on upping the sub to spawn ratio and using compaction is phenomenal and has really upped my game (except when I am using bacterial spawn and all that extra water available bites me in the behind).  Thanks in advance and appreciate the increase PC time advice.

So I went over to read his wbs tek, should work for any seeds including millet but as I state in all of my grain prep I prefer and recommend rinsing your grains first, secondly the increased time for vent and sterilization cycle; as for his pictured spawn that doesn't look bacterial it looks like  typical LC growth.

Ahh, hadn't considered that the LC would factor in and give it the more shiny and thick appearance.  Ok, much obliged and again thanks for all your contributions to this site!

Thanks, I appreciate that and my pleasure.

Yeah grains inoculated with LC/LI have a look to them that kind of differs from agar or g2g, at least to my eyes. I suspect it has something to do with the speed of colonization and the watery nature of the broth.

thanks for the write up p9, this is super useful!

I want to use your substrate compression tek and shoebox these PE jars:

I did a2g transfers on all of these the same day, but shook em too early and not very well, like 15% growth so some colonized faster.

Trying to be aware of possible contams since I want to use lots of substrate and water... My thoughts:
  • jar 1 is almost fully colonized, if the grains against the wall don't colonize over the next few days I should be concerned
  • jar 2 is wet on the jar walls below the grain line which is kinda concerning? But the grains are far from the walls...
  • jar 1 and 3 are just wet up top but aren't condensating on the grains, so those look better
  • I think they are condensating more than most of the healthy spawn examples in the OP and that's my biggest concern. I have pretty big temperature swings up here and usually don't run AC, so I'd guess some condensation is expected?
  • nothing is super white or creamy or slimy, good
  • rhizos are blending into the colonized grain as growth continues on all jars, good
  • no spiky rhizos anywhere off of fully colonized grains, good
  • no metabolites or other discoloration, good
  • growth is uniform, good
  • they were easy to shake, those oats were so loose I could move em just by picking the jars up and uncolonized oats up top still move pretty easily. But I did shake pretty early

I thiiink jars 1 and 3 look clean as long as the oats finish colonizing, jar 2 is wetter and maybe cause for concern but isn't showing any other signs of contamination. Not much to lose since I'm gonna shoebox em...

Am I on the right track here? Are these healthy (aside jar 2) and just a little on the wet side or am I in denial lol

If you have reservations about your spawn then just shoebox them, observe the results and make notes; this is the best way to learn about what you're observing.

cool, shoeboxes are exactly what I plan to do. Best way to learn is by doing and observing... Thank you!

What a great thread. Thank you. I'm 99% sure I have been fighting bacteria. Lot's of condensation in my grain bags. I'm going to take my time and read the whole thread.

I've been working my way through your videos on the toob for a while now
and also this post and only just made the connection. I'm a doughnut.

A heartfelt thank you to you for sharing your knowledge, it's been of great help to me (same to the whole site). This checklist is helping me regain confidence for my next tubs.. however I would love the opinion of a vet in regards to these jars.. I have my suspicions on a couple but would greatly appreciate a second or third opinion while I'm still learning.

* GT LC to Millet. Very dense & tough to break up, but has over incubated I think.

Also bonus question what would you do with this old agar plate with the long fella growing out of it?

Jars def got some bacteria, probably fine to spawn to a shoebox or top fruit though

Some look better then others id say #5 and #7 look like your best options. If you have any doubt feel free to shake the shit out of them and watch them recover(or not recover) in a few days. Clean spawn will recover just fine quickly.

I love this thread. I've been thinking about an aspect of it. That healthy mycelia can look bad on poorly prepped grains (or simply different grains)

Case in point, a member here is doing a ton of tests on no-prep, water with dry grain in jar... and posting results that look bad, but TC's are saying they are fine. The poster (YoshiTrainer) is really quite wonderful, doing great work, but I remain skeptical that his resulting grain spawn is ready for prime time.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28226768#28226768

A.K.A. says to the above post:
Quote:

"Those jars are all fine.

This is what makes learning spawn so difficult, there’s many types of mycelium and then they also can look different on different grains.
"

Here are some more of his colonization from no-prep: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28052502#28052502

extremely valuable thread! just finished reading thru its entirety. been battling some sort of sweet bacterial contam in my spawn but am at a fucking loss as to where its getting in as my spawn appears to be clean in comparison to everything ive seen posted..

just switched to jars to see if maybe its my bags so havnt been able to smell them yet. everything has been spore to agar to lc. some even agar to brf pucks then bck to agar using josex tek.  been doing spawn bags with very similar appearance in growth however when i give the bag a squeeze soon after colonization takes hold, a sweet smell develops. definitely not that delicious mushroom smell that id expect.

any thoughts greatly appreciated!

That spawn looks good to me:rockon:

None of them are fully colonized yet, let them finish.

Is it some exotic species? Their myc can smell different than cubes.

I do get a sort of astringent smell sometimes, but only after spawning to shoeboxes. May be CO2 mixed with coir smell, in my case.

And yeah I thought that spawn looks great too, nice job!

Sweet smelling will be no bueno, but as far as looks, seems fine other than those really plump looking brown grains in the first pic.

If you're growing cubes and the mycelium smells like anything other than fresh mushrooms, no good.
