They’re not great but those will definitely fruit.

I’m gonna guess they’re over hydrated.

Yeah but overhydration isn't the source of his contamination.

What grain are you running?

Rye. Thanks p9hu7 & Aka! I always appreciate your help.

I really did hydrate these rye berries well. Maybe another transfer or two on my cultures would of helped.

I doubt it's your culture, bacteria is super easy to spot on agar. Do you rinse your grains, and do you vent for at least 10 mins?

I rinsed the rye until the water was clear and then some. Also making it a habit of venting 15 minutes.

You helped me before with grain prep so I dunno what exactly is going on. I do work with a bag of rye that has quite a few grains cut in half.

So this makes the hydrating of grains a bit tricky.

That doesn't matter, the mycelium eats all. Your grain may be shit, have you considered changing your grains?

I'll just mention something quick that I read about bacteria which is that starch actually helps bacteria to deal with differences in osmotic pressures, big words condensed into small in essence this means it helps bacteria to live and grow in harsher environments such as solid media with low water activity (such as grain) to theoretically too many burst grain could mean more chances of bacterial colonies getting a stronghold. Tho as mentioned (or implied) I also believe that too wet grain is a bigger problem than a few too many burst ones. Bacteria will have a much easier time on wet spots than it will on dry spots with the help of starch.

You're correct, if there is bacteria present.

Faht uses spelt, which is busted open and starchy, he has no issues.

Same with LC, it is a great environment for bacteria, the trick is to thoroughly sterilize your media. Fortunately for us LC broth is readily sterilized due to the conductivity of h20.

Low quality grains with either a large bioburden, or a heavy overburden in terms of bran, filth, etc, or both, will be difficult to sterilize. These conditions are barriers to sterility.

If one starts with quality media then burst or wet grains shouldn't pose much of an obstacle to sterility.

I wash my grain like my balls. A few drops of soap and warm waster and I whip the shit out of them with a whisk. A remarkable increase in shit washes away from them. Is it objectively helping the situation? I have no idea but it works for me. Grains seem to hydrate a lot faster too afterwards.

I think that it would, it makes perfect sense to me. Oats are notoriously dirty, this is what I'm talking about exactly. You are removing obstacles to sterility with one simple trick ; )

Seems like a decent use of dish soap, try that out atom.

Thanks all you heavy hitters of the Shroomery.
I really appreciate the time and help!

I can work on grains in a week and will take the dish soap advice!

In the meanwhile I'll keep reading and learning. Thank you!!!

Anytime.

Josex has a yet to be revealed treatment for his shitty grains with an abnormally high bioburden, but using dish soap as a surfactant seems like a legit operating procedure for prepping shitty/dirty grains.

The increased density and surface area from dirt and other shit in your grains decreases the efficiency of your pc. I would imagine that the use of detergent would help to wash away those extra layers that serve as barriers to efficiency, and may even aid in the sterilization process by wetting the surface area of the grains.

I don't see how it could hurt, it's simple and requires little effort, definitely wouldn't hurt to try.

Good call, smart.

Don't forget the whisk! Agitate the shit out of it. At this stage the grains are bone dry and hard as a rock so they won't get damaged even if you swish it around like a madman. It really busts off a lot of crap.

Someone needs to create a synthetic sterile grain alternative so we don't need to worry so much. I actually give this thought sometimes but haven't settled on a worthy (cost effective) idea yet.

Lol synthetic grain alternative.

That would be awesome. You could try little balls of steel wool dipped into agar/brf mixture.

Genius idea.  If I did enough grains for like 10 jars or so would a couple drops work?  Or do you give it a squirt like doing a sink of dishes?  Then rinse it off and ready to boil?  Thanks Smart for that idea

No no, just 2-3 drops. Ill use a bit of a squirt with my GF's natural soap but regular Dawn or whatever just like 3 good drops, then i do 3 rinses, whisking each rinse.

Bad news. That thing doesn't sterilize, its junk.
