I’ve got four different strains colonizing a 0.02% strength wheat malt extract brew. Should be ready pretty soon. I volunteer to document the process with pics of the LC grains pre-inoculation and post, if the spawn goes bad. Can’t guarantee it won’t be due to fuckups in the SAB... but it’s something. For science!

I’ve been messing with making syringes and tried using some prints that were from a tub that had gotten a spot of trich during fruiting.
I washed the spores into a half pint jar and let it sit for a week. Looked like normal clear water with spores in it, but when I shot some into grain it turned the whole jar green in like 4 days.
Liquid is so tough to gauge.

It seems impossible to read by eye. Its like smelling grain, just because it smells good, or in the case of LC "looks good", doesn't necessarily mean a damn thing.

I'm surprised at you AKA...the noob that I am, I don't think spores can go anywhere but agar. I mean spores just can't be trusted IMO.

So I've decided to do the test on soaked wheat myself, these are the results, I've posted this to my millet prep thread as it specifically mentions soaking large cereal grains:
The following is a test of my previous statement, this test was done with wheat:
Wheat is an excellent grain, it holds a great deal of moisture but requires boiling to truly hydrate this large kernel. The following picture is a side by side comparison of completely raw unhydrated wheat next to the same wheat that has been cold soaked for exactly 24 hours:

The row on the left is the 24 hour soak, the right column is raw. Not much difference visual on the exterior, let's cut them open to view the inside:

As you can see the interior white starchy core has not been affected much by the soak but it has absorbed a small amount of water for sure.
The following picture serves to illustrate the obvious difference in size between the 24 hour soak and some wheat that was properly hydrated via a 20 min boil:

As you can see there is a significant difference in colour and size.
Now time to cut the boiled grain open to view the interiors side by side:

There is a very obvious difference between the boiled grain on the left, and the soaked grain on the right. The soaked grain has a veneer of hydration surrounding the white starchy core while the boiled grain has a clear center and is fully/properly hydrated.
Although I believe its possible to grow on soaked wheat or other large cereal grains, the soak method does not fully hydrate the kernel.

I can see 'em
Thanks for doing this, this is a really good example of what to look for for hydrated grains. And it's shown me that the overnight soak I was doing before boiling seems to be unnecessary, which is awesome.

Pictures are working great. Fantastic write up and results. Looking forward to these same side-by-side comparisons with other grains.

Yes , I can
I started doing 12-24 hours soak with boiling water and Ive been really impressed with how much extra water its absorbing , by my basic calculation about a month ago i found that my bags of rye simmered would go from 2.5 to 4- 4.25 lbs , with the boiling water soak they shop up to like 5 lbs

Pertaining to the soak or boil grains..
Doesn’t the pressure cooker do that also ??

Are you asking if by heating grains through sterilization they become hydrated?
If that is the case then yes, if you add water to your jar or bag, no if you don't. Why would anyone bother hydrating their grain if all they needed to do was to add heat and pressure?

One thing that is always going to cause issues with any sort of "hydrating tek" is grain differences. Im lucky to have access to all kinds of different grains from local farms within my state. Looking at the times I have bought the likes of Blue seal brand or whatever stuff that is likely what many people are ending up with, shit can be real different. I dont know if its freshness or what but the local stuff I prefer to use is way easier to hydrate than big box stuff. Maybe its age, maybe its genetics of grain, maybe its chemical treatment who the fuck knows.

I agree! I've bought rye berries from 3 or 4 sources and only one source (unfortunately the most expensive) has barely any cut grains.
These cut grains make it very difficult to not have burst grains so don't rely on some burst grains that your grains are done
Sorry this is not the best photo but if you look closely you should see what I mean
