thanks for the heads up i'll try those out as well. edit: do you have a lid tek handy that you've been using with the stickies? i'm pretty sure you just punch a hole in the lid then put the sticker over it lol but now i'm seeing some people using like 4 holes? (clearly haven't updated my lid tek in a long time)

If you do the poly tight enough you won't have to use foil either

So you wipe the bag with alcohol, poke, and slap on some micropore tape? Does the hole ever have lingering LC that fouls the tape?

this was neat, tried it out and it worked fine on the new jars back to poly lids. thanks for the tip, sick of wasting foil.
anyone got thoughts on this jar? i'm a bit suspect of it being mildly bacterial. ignore the massive hard water deposits i set up the pressure cooker with water like an hour before loading jars and completely forgot vinegar lol

This has been a phenomenal read and masterful write up. It’s helped me immensely just spotting signs of bacterial presence. Gem after gem. Well done!

will do, would you give it a shake then? i've been torn cuz i kinda wanna see if it leaves any grains alone. also thank you! i really appreciate that i put a lot of effort into grains and they kinda pissed me off along the way lmao so that's good to hear

Got some weird tyc spawn.
It looks really good to me except the random spots with sorta chunky rhizo fingers.

I've got similar looking finger projections in this questionable g2g jar.

Some spots have me nervous too. I'm afraid I see green but I'm hoping they're dark specs from the rye. Unsure if I should spawn.

hey shaman, i find those pretty suspect haha if you spawn them don't mix with good spawn. i would send em to shoeboxes though but i'm a curious fella lol

Thank you. They were all from G2G but that one I posted got a shake to better distribute the grains. I'm afraid all my jars may be questionable. I noticed an odd fuzz on the top, and when sprayed with water is seemed to dissipate. I do not believe this to be typical mycelium behavior but it could just be dry.
Considering this was a G2G from a MS master I know its not 100% clean. I still want to try and fruit but I'm wondering if shoe boxes would be a better way to go now. I've got 10 jars from two different masters I was going to fruit in two bigger tubs.

Yeah dude i wouldn't go to big tubs i'd probably be trying to go as small as possible and get to fruit as soon as possible.. am i understanding correctly that you opened the jars and sprayed them with water?!

I'm not sure if it's definitive but I've seen a few people mention they think that happens from bacteria. I've had some jars with similar chunky rhizo growths, still fruited just fine

Just a few, only because I planned on spawning them right after anyway. I know people dunk their grains with no ill affect, I didnt think it would be a big deal.
I did go out and buy some shoe boxes for this run. Handy little guys, I see why so many use them. Not sure how I'll fruit them exactly but that's a glorious bridge I'll figure out should I get to cross it. Maybe dub it, plastic bag, or insert into bigger tub, not so sure. Thanks again for the idea!

no problem, i essentially just do mini monos as my shoeboxes and i do unmodified tubs. if i don't have to do extra work i don't lol. i also strongly recommend never spraying your jars again hahaha! i've never heard of anyone dunking grains (and if i have it slipped my mind), just the whole substrate tbh. regardless it's a contam vector you don't need and if your prep was on point you'll likely just mess with your appropriate water content my guy.
also for what it's worth though myc has a ton of variation in how it will respond when hit by water, don't try to use it as a gauge on normal myc behavior that will likely just leave you frustrated.

Dunking grains was a thing for a while around 2015. There isn't any good evidence for or against it. I personally believe that if you have proper bulk sub hydration you don't need to dunk your grains before spawning. Lots of people did it for a while, my self included but I don't know that it really helps a colonized grain absorb more water before spawning to bulk.

Don’t remember where we was having a conversation about sfd’s and them allowing bacteria through so on a few jars I used a sfd on outside the lid and micropore on the inside. They where the easiest jars I’ve had to break up.
This is anecdotal of course and hardly a proper experiment. Another factor is it was from g2g and no agar was present. Not sure if that affected anything.

that's interesting, i previously mentioned micropore tape gave me the ol' dry shaft no vaseline by allowing WAY too much water in during the pc cycle which is an issue i even see at times with my poly lids.
long story short, did the grains in those jars during prep come out of the pc pretty much exactly the same as you prepped/sent them in?!
