Great fucking post and no doubt will end up stickied.

One exception to the spikey rule is enigma. She always grows like that on grain from what I’ve seen.

I’m a bacteria farmer myself. Still trying to figure out my weak point on that. I see zero on agar so has to be in my prep or the xfer process.

I think we all recognize which tam this is! One my stick on sfd’s looked a little wet when I pulled it out the pc so I picked at it a lil and it popped open. Jar was hot and fresh out the PC so thought maybe anything that got in would get cooked off... it obviously did not. Think this is only the second time I’ve had easily identifiable contamination in a jar.

I wish all bad jars where that easy to spot.

Oof, yeah that's a kick in the nuts to find, especially when you prepped those grains so nicely.

Yeah I started using SFD stickies when I learn about them from D3, but I am not 100% convinced yet. I made up some LC jars and decided not to open them for 4 weeks or to put anything in them to test the Sticky SFD safety factor. So they are sitting on my shelf clear as day still closed from the PC run. So far 1 week and it is still clean.

Do you guys have stickers on the inside and out or just the outside? I might double mine. I haven't run anywhere near enough jars to say whether this is normal and I also had bacteria which likely impacted timing but I found the sfd sticker jars colonized more slowly than poly or even syringe filters (same oats, same plates).

I did both sides of the lid. I cant say for sure because all my jars spent 3 weeks in the basement which is like 20 degrees. I recently moved them out because of the slow growth.

For me learning spawn was/is the hardest part of cult.

It really just takes a lot of experience so you develop an eye for it. I remember first starting out and looking at pictures of jars and people talking about how contaminated one was and thinking ....those look identical to me

As long as it’s fluffy and you can see the organized little hairs growing it’s probably ok. At least that’s how I’d sum it up for somebody starting out.

This is my first ever jar. Maz syringe right to grain, ran the jar in about ten days and went 7-8 flushes :super:

A couple of the rhizo fingers look maybe a little sketchy to me now but for the most part I think it’s a decent shot of good rhizo eating grain. Lol I didn’t know the terms yet and kept saying it looks like there’s feathers in the wbs.

So here’s a question:

How early can one tell whether mycelium is being harassed by bacteria?

These were inoculated on the 7th with PESH LC. The growth isn’t spiky. It’s thick. Is it too thick? I think it looks thicc thick personally, but maybe I just appreciate a thick milky thing a little too much and it’s actually bad thick?

When is too early to toss and start again?

The third pic looks mostly good to me, maybe the one spot towards the top is iffy.

This is where it’s tricky. Thick isn’t necessarily bad, it’s what kind of thick is it.

That third jar you can see all the light fluffy hairs but there’s a lot of them. If it was chunky or creamy thick it would be bad. Bald spots on the grain are a giveaway too.

That looks good from my house. I certainly wouldn't toss anything there at this stage.

All 3 look good to me.

You're right a.k.a, creating and identifying good spawn is the hardest and most important part of cult. I'd also say that the jar you posted is rhizomorphic and not the type of mycelium that has that stressed/bacterial look. You can tell by the way it starts rhizomorphic but seamlessly blends with the rest of the mycelium where it meets and doesn't persist between the glass and the grain after it fully colonized...well maybe a bit, but still, It looks quite different. If anything it looks to me like your ge hole was packed too tight with poly or somehow had restricted GE.

It looks super weird, can't quite put my finger on it. It isn't super thick from bacteria, doesn't have excess moisture /condensation or anything else. Its an odd cod, but not likely bacterial.

Edit*

The very fact that you went that many flushes with it is the best evidence that it wasn't bacterial.

I think I’m getting a bit of an eye for it thanks to this thread.

I’m thankful that I now have an explanation as to why 2/3 of my grows hang out for a month and then finally just look too ugly to keep around anymore.

One mono tub of GT from January 7, not pinning.
Two PE6 shoeboxes from January 23, not pinning.

Then I’ve got two grow bags, and three more shoeboxes spawned so far this month. All of my PE6 looked the same, so I suspect none of it will fruit. My APEU was thick and milky. My TOC and GT shoeboxes from the 9th had some signs of bacteria (see previous post) but they weren’t as bad as the other things I’ve spawned without getting fruit.

This thread has (hopefully) been a lifesaver for me. I’m not sure how long I could’ve gone in spawning without getting fruit and stayed in the hobby.

It takes a lot of close attention when making observations and correlating them to the behavior of your tub. When you fuck it up as much as I have you get a pretty good sixth sense for how your spawn is going to perform.

Just remember that even though you may be "failing" or "fucking up" your spawn from time to time, failure is the best teacher. Soon enough you'll have ninja eyes for bacteria.

Tubs that fail to pin are definitely the result of an internal battle between myc and bacteria, it can't afford the resources to reproduce when battling an infection.

Edit*

I also wanted to point out one if the harder things to discern between when following that guide, this is where the discerning eye comes in. Even though some of that myc looks "thick" its a light, airy, fluffy thickness that looks very healthy; unlike the compacted bacterial looking mycelium that looks more like moulded white plastic rather than mycelium.

There is a marked difference in the density there, I think that if you look closely you'll be able to tell the difference.

Apeu is exceptionally thick tomentose myc ime.

Like really next level thick even when it’s healthy. I’ve only run two cultures but both were like that.

Just went back through all my jar pics. The one successful grow I had definitely had healthier-looking mycelium, if not perfectly healthy.

Versus the tub from January 7 that still hasn’t pinned:

Future noobs, take heed. Bad spawn isn’t worth the shelf space!

The top one has a touch but it's not that bad.

Those bottom ones are certainly bacterial.

Figured I share how things have progressed. Current status: the two jars that had islands of uncolonized grain 5 days ago are now completely colonized and appear to me to be the healthiest of the four.

Most obvious sign of bacteria, which all jars exhibit, is excessive moisture. In addition, the mycelium nearest the uncolonized grain in the other two jars is bright white and rhizomorphic. Curious to know if others agree/disagree.

Known methodology fails I'll never repeat, but posted here for laughs:

1. Instead of working with agar, each of the two grain master jars was inoculated with an entire spore syringe.

2. G2G was from the 2 masters to just 4, so all 4 are far too full.

The above notwithstanding, I intend to proceed with the monotub using coir and see what happens, if only for gaining experience. Leaning towards removing the fully colonized jars from the incubator until the other jars catch up.
