Oh you know damn well it's going to work best with an albino variety.

The myc is starting to reach up into the compressed top layer.

Very rhizo

I find that the compression causes the mycelium to colonize the layer below the top layer first and then evenly enters the compressed top layer all at once. This seems to be pretty typical.
You don't find portions of the sub that have raced up into the top layer before the rest of the sub has completed.

Nice visual! What ratio do you use for your PE (or other varieties, I suppose) tubs? I’m sure you’ve said it before but maybe you can save me some time looking for it lol

For all varieties I run a full tub with:
1100gr coir; 3 true quarts verm 5 liters h20.
12 liters of expanded CV for substrate, the remainder is for a compressed top layer.
For a shoebox I mix a batch with the recipe above, then add 1 jar of spawn/shoebox and then fill the shoebox almost to the top with that cv. I compress and level the sub, then take more cv and fill the remainder of the shoebox, compress and re-level.
My shoeboxes are filled to the brim and then fruited after full colonization in a monotub if I have more than 1 shoebox, or if solo I run in a sweater box.
I will be making a video of this as well once I have some spawn.

Watching the myc hit the top layer is my favorite part. I ran only clear liners for a long time just so I could watch it go

I need to switch to clear liners. I didn't run a liner on this specifically so that I can watch the performance.

Thanks for the detailed reply so would you say that the main sub block (without the compressed layer) is a 1:2 or 1:3?

I'm not entirely sure, I inoculate with 4lb spawn bags (4 myco quarts).
What's the ratio with 4 jars and a regular 650gr brick?
My sub has 1.7 times more coir than what you would normally spawn 4 jars into.

Ah gotcha. I think it’s around 1:3-1:4. When I make a 1/16th of the 650g recipe, I get about a myco quart of CV

Appreciate ya!

How am I looking so far? Took your advice, P9, and increased my vent time on PC. Also soaked my millet for about 8 hours when I used to do it for 24.

Overall they look pretty good, but I wouldn’t g2g those personally.
Spawn them all day though.

I'm quite curious about the "if it's hard to shake it's probably bacterial" info. When I have jars like ukdude, if I shake it a bit, I can basically get the whole chunk to move up and down in the jar. Then I'll swing it from up to down to get it to bang itself on the bottom and top of the jar. Basically like one of those shake weight dumbells that look like your jerking it. But it takes a lot of force. I can no way do it with 1 hand like in p9 videos. So this means they have contam in it?

I've never had a jar that was hard to shake apart perform well, they usually flush very poorly and result in pools of metabolites on the surface of the sub after full colonization.
If you let your jars consolidate for weeks then this might not be the case, but even still, I'd be suspicious.
@ukdude
Your jars have a funny look about them, spawn them and see what happens, not worth the risk using for g2g.

Crap, well I took a look at my jars and I seem to be checking all the boxes for contams lol. I wonder if it's because I used the blenderless li method though. So I have an extra 30ml of water added when innoculating. Mycellium is very white, which is another sign of contam?
Condensation under grain level:

My shoebox spawned 13 days ago, big pools of metabolites (clear water blobs right?)

That shoebox looks alright, those are just water beads which you want.
Metabolites are yellow/orange like the bottom left here.

Those jars are definitely bacterial, you’re right.
The extra liquid from li won’t cause contamination but if there’s bacteria anywhere in there they’ll explode when they find the extra water.
The bald spots on the grain and thick white myc is reaction to bacteria usually.
