I like the bit included in there about smell not being fullproof. I see a lot of newer growers think spawn is clean because it smelled fine.
I only use smell to confirm it's contaminated, never to confirm it's clean. Essentially, if it smells bad, it's bad. If it smells good, it could still be bad.
Nice write up. I like it

After reading this I think almost every jar of grain I’ve ever spawned was bacterial.

Great thread and well-timed, had been planning to spawn four qt jars of rye within a couple weeks to start my first monotub. G2G was 6 days ago, what are the chances the islands of uncolonized grain will succeed in holding the no-grow line?

Possibly. Slightly bacterial jars can sometimes be a little difficult to spot with certainty when first starting out
Honestly, you'll get it down. Sometimes I can't describe why my spawn looks bad other than it just looks "off" for some reason

I agree it definitely wasn't properly sterilized, as I said I didn't do it. This isn't a foaf deal. We're running a refresher course tomorrow. I don't care much for failure, been doing it too long. I also don't like jars that clump at the bottom or have excess moisture. My average jars look perfect, that's how I like things.

This is really great, thanks. Good to see something up to date and comprehensive about a very crucial part of the cult process.

So...

Bacterial (thick, some wet-looking grains pressed to the glass) APEU?
And...

Bacterial (spikey) TOC?
And...

Maybe clean GT clone?

How would you diagnose these jars based upon the OP? Whats the appropriate course of action, would you feel comfortable expanding those?
The point of this thread is to get you guy's thinking critically about the health of your own spawn. I want to know what you think about your jars. You're now in possesion of some basic criteria, how do these jars hold up in your mind?

I feel like my APEU is probably trash, and that the TOC and GT probably both deserve a shot.
All the spawn I’ve worked with until now has basically looked like the APEU, been impossible to break up by shaking, and taken forever to fruit (a month) if it does at all.
The TOC and GT jars look like they’ll break up fairly easily with a shake, and the rhizomorphic growth is different than everything I’ve worked with, so despite the cautions of spikey... I think I’ll roll with them.
Everything I’m growing these days either goes into a shoebox or a XLS grow bag. Being that it stays isolated like that, probably with the experience watching each type of jar get spawned to coir to see how it does.
But yeah, I feel like I might suck at making non-shitty jars. 7 quarts of oats in the PC right now, so I’ll try to do better this time!

All of those jars have bacteria. You can see the stressed out spikey mycelium clearly, excessive moisture and some uncolonized grain.
I wouldn't combine them with each other nor with other potentially clean spawn. Spawn those bad boys as individuals in a shoebox or a bag and make note of how they perform. If most or all of your spawn looks similar to these then you know that it's time to run through the prep checklist.

Well that makes sense if you weren't aware that anything needed to change. Dirty spawn is the primary source of contamination and poor flushes assuming that you've nailed your growing conditions.

Yeah I’m just not exactly sure what needs to change. First things first is I’m going to make sure my grains are drier. The batch of oats in the PC were left out overnight. Vented 5-10 minutes longer than I usually do.
Gotta say, I’m casting a pretty suspicious eye on all the agar and LC options I have to inoculate with right now.

I updated the OP, I added a grain prep checklist to help troubleshoot.
If you're having issues with clean spawn id cut out the liquid until you've nailed clean cultures that produce clean spawn.

If you're facing consistent contam problems, I always suggest to run a control(s) for every step of the process for the future preps. So, keep at least one plate completely wrapped/sealed, make a transfer of a blank dish to another blank dish, keep one of your sterilized grain jars on the side and don't open or touch it, etc. A lot of times that can show you where the chink in your armor is.
Check back on these controls periodically and see if anything comes of them. If your blank wrapped plate is dirty, then it means you didn't sterilize the agar properly (or you messed up the pour if you pour your plates). If the blank dish transfer is fucked, it means your sterile transfer technique is subpar. Dirty grain jar = incomplete sterilization.
It's not guaranteed that this will help you nail down the problem, but it can depending on the issue.
