I recently started not trying too hard to break clumps apart at spawn. And if the clump is in the bottom of the jar, I'll just leave it there.

My theory is that if the mycelia is forming a kind of cyst to isolate bacteria, I'll let it keep doing its job rather than forcefully exposing and spreading the bacteria.

But this may only work with small seed spawn. I don't know whether the chunks will be strong enough to avoid breaking them up with wheat or rye.

Little bits are going to stick together a bit, that's normal. I was just referring
to large balls of tenacious/chunky grains  that refuse to break apart. You'll know it when you see it.

Spotted some elevated levels of condensation a few days after shaking. Its from an experimental agar dish that I think I didnt clean up enough.

They don't look bad at all. You'll get condensation from time to time, it's just when it's super excessive that you need to start worrying.

If they recovered well then you're probably fine. Pictures aren't always the easiest to diagnose.

Yeah those Death Stars (that term fits well haha) are no good, but p9, I’m wondering how difficult do you find those to break up by hand? Like if you were to find a Death Star in a bag that you could actually grasp, would it be kinda tough to break or crumble relatively easy?

Generally any clumps will break apart in the jar with some good smacks if it's not a problem, but mycelium is only soo strong, even heavily bacterial spawn will readily break in your hand because your hand muscles are much stronger than mycelium.

Have you ever had a jar that was super hard to break apart? It's like that, just a huge ball of it instead of the entire jar. If it won't break up no matter how hard you shake and smack the jar it's probably from bacteria,  don't over think it.

You can get bacterial spawn to fruit, it's hard to really say with 100% accuracy how bacterial your spawn is without being there and working with it; but super thick/tenacious mycelium isn't a sign of great health. You might even see super thick ropey rhizomorphic looking mycelium poking out in between those grains like roots that are glued together with bacterial mycelium.

Mycelium naturally clumps, it's only when it clumps abnormally that I'd start questioning things. Small bits of grains will almost always clump because it's being consumed by the mycelium.

What do you guys think on this one, yeast maybe?

I tried to rationalize to myself that it could be knots but I know that’s a fallacy. Jar from 6-7

So far my jar I spawned a few days ago is looking ok I think…fingers crossed.  I did have another question though.  3 other jars I have are much more clearly bacterial with spiky rhizo growth and extra condensation Ive seen on this thread.  In the interest of learning something I want to try and top fruit them with Bod’s sandwich bag method.  Would you recommend adding a verm or coir casing to the top of the jars or a mix of both?  Ive got a bag of verm that I used to make BRF pucks and some PF tek jars and I also have some coir left from my shoeboxes I made.  Again thanks for all the great info!  I’m going to try to germinate some MSS on brf pucks to see if I get cleaner myc so I can have pretty jars like P9 someday lol

That’s a tough one because they do look like knots… any yeast I’ve had/seen doesn’t look like that.. not that white.  I’d like to know what comes of the jar

these are definitely bacterial, but is this too much to spawn a shoebox?
ive spawned lots bacterial before, i cant remember if last time was better or worse

found out my PC actually only operates at 8psi, so, I guess I just spent my $$$ on self practice lessons

Ah, shitty. Yeah those bad boy's are pooched. If you want to run one jar/shoebox to see what happens, give it a go.

Any advice? Thnx in advance!
