Yay, my work was referenced by another member pleased to donate to science.
I think you already know this but shaking my jars resulted in very little break up so that's another warning light as well as looks alone that I'll learn to watch out for. I thought it was quite common for good spawn to be near unshakeable even at 80% depending on how the grain was prepared so it didn't worry me initially. This thread is super useful.

Here are 4 pictures of jars of mine that are still colonizing or are pretty much colonized. What do you think? They seem fine to me. The growth looks rhizomorphic and fuzzy. These are all PE. Some jars have some condensation visible but those jars have spawn almost filling the entire jar. None of it looks creamy or too white. all of it is ropey, spikey, and fuzzy when looked at closely.

So using that checklist and the provided pictures, how would you diagnose your spawn? Look carefully.

There you go, you're already better at diagnosing your own spawn than you were when you woke up
Thanks for donating the pics. I used to have soo many but I deleted them all off my phone : (

Good, I hope it makes things easier for you guys Being present in the moment and deliberate with your movements when inoculations are done you can avoid all of these examples in your spawn.

i would say that it is good from the rhizomorphic look of it but your OP did not state if the "spiky" look was good or not. It was just mentioned in with the creamy growth. The pictures of the spiky jars have similar condensation as mine. Since it was mentioned alongside the bad jar pictures it leads me to believe these jars are not as good as they should be but the look of the mycelium seems alright to me.

So basically everything in that post is meant to ID bad spawn, so yes, the spikes are not a good omen of things to come.
Your spawn doesn't look too bad, you've got a some bacteria but not something that will have you come out empty handed. You hit the nail on the head, they're not 100% but you'll probably get something for your efforts. I'm going to bet that those are hard to break up. Your last pic looks the best out of the lot.
Now that you can see what's up you'll be able to make predictions in the future once you run that spawn through to see how it performs. You can decide for yourself if that performance is worth your while should you ever encounter those issues again. This will also create a spectrum of acceptable contamination in your mind, if what you see in your jars isn't good enough now then you'll know that anything past that point is no good; or if it is acceptable you'll start to get a feel for what isn't.
Having said all of that, a few hours ago you couldn't tell that anything was up at all and now you can, that was the entire point. Throw an update here when you run the spawn through it's course

Ill take pictures and update when I do the tub. I cant remember how every jar has looked when I have made tubs previously but I have always gotten multiple flushes producing good fruits and I am pretty sure I have done tubs using jars that look just like that. They dont succumb to trich often either they usually just stop producing fruits. I figured the spiky look was a good thing and think I have only ever gotten one or two jars that had that really thick creamy look to them.

I uploaded a couple mold pics because I've seen cobweb thrown around a lot lately.
From the right - Jar in early stages of trichoderma, jar in sporulation stage of trichoderma, jar with Cubensis mycelium overtaken by cobweb.

Here is a close up of the cobweb. The jar is not hazy it is sporulating all over the inside of the jar. If you zoom in you can notice how it poofs up over the top of the grain. It colonized the jar in 2 days.

For my specific example is there any way to determine the likely cause?
1) Grains were prepared using bods oat prep tek.
2) I inoculated using agar which was 4th gen transfer of mss that I'd never fruited. It looked clean.
3) Transfers were made in a SAB, flamed scalpel. 1/4 of a plate in each jar. I did section each 1/4 in about thirds though and transferred 3 agar wedges to each.
I'm guessing 3 is the most likely. Maybe you could add most common causes of bad spawn to your write up too.

I know some people use big agar wedges but I use small ones. One 2oz no pour to 14 quarts. I've tried larger wedges and there is no benefit.
Bacterial spawn is usually a grain prep issue if you're using agar. Jars too wet.

Thanks for all your hard work p9! Maybe I can find an example you don't have from my VAST collection! But first I have to study your most excellent write up eh! Thanks again!
1/5 1/8 1/10 Four shoeboxes all tryc'd out... not sure what this was... But this one is hairy! A wedge stuck to the top... This one on the right was too dry, got re-hydrated & PC'd again This jar was truly gross, so it stayed in the jar... RW Maybe you'll find one of these pics useful...

I have to admit, it’s very annoying spawning 5 monos to find all but 1 trich out before really starts going. I’ve definitely started taking your approach over the last month or so and if it don’t look right just toss it, you end up wasting more resources trying to get a little something out of bacterial spawn. Good push in the right direction for people to see just toss that shit and start over!
