And it’s a cross, the agar is more rhizo not that that matters on grain.

I hate taking pics of grain jars because they always look different in the pic.

I agree. I think phone cameras need a setting called "grain jar" should hit up apple and android about this issue.

Couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve taken a pic of a jar then had to go back to the jar and figure out wtf I’m seeing in the pic that I just don’t see with the naked eye. 9/10 it’s usually a weird reflection or warping around the raised print on jars.

Thanks again p-man!

My first jars were 6 in total, 3 looked white and thick and the other 3, 1 was good spawn and the other 2 were just eh. I thought that thick marshmellow ones were the good ones and the other 3 bad. Little did I know it was the opposite lol. Got trich in both tubs I used these bad jars.

Here’s an example of what bacterial spawn will do, this is one of my Malabar cultures. Usually they grow fairly normal when they’re not bacterial.

Status update for the benefit of the community. For reference, my last post on this thread is at the bottom of page 8. Contrary to my stated plans at the time, on further consideration I opted against refrigerating the colonized jars and waiting for the other jars to catch up so that all could be spawned together. I simply couldn't justify the risk/reward. The mycelium in the partially colonized jars had too much of the creamy/stressed appearance.
Instead, I spawned the two colonized jars to coir, largely in accordance with BOD's EAF Monotub Tek, and covered with a thin coir pseudocasing. That was 2 weeks ago, and this morning I see a fair number of primordia and a pin. Could've done a better job flattening the surface... Planning to start 12hr LED cycling tomorrow.
To be sure, things could still take a turn for the worst, but so far I couldn't be more pleased with the progress of my first monotub, especially considering methodology fails (not least grain inoculation via multispore syringe), and I'm glad I chose to spawn and not throw everything out.
The process of spawning evidenced another contam indicator besides the excessive moisture I'd noted: I had to use my fingers to break up the grain sufficiently to get it out of the jars, shaking wasn't going to do it. Even though things look to be on track despite the spawn exhibiting these contam indicators, I wouldn't encourage extrapolating my apparent luck in a way that undermines the OP. Again, entirely possible this will end badly prior to harvest, and those with spawn to spare should err on the side of caution.
Sidenote: the two jars I spawned were of different varieties (GT & B+). Had intended to mix each with coir separately and give each their own 1/2 tub plot of land like two bordering nation states, but it didn't end up that way...it's all mixed together. Wondering what the hell I'll end up with

I'm curious to know if some of the things in the grain spawn check-list can carry over into checking if your substrate is infected with bacteria. I imagine you would never have infected substrate if your grain spawn was clean but I often see people posting pictures of suspect substrate where the mycelium has thick thread-like sections reaching into the air as if the mycelium is stressed. It doesn't seem very healthy to my un-trained eye and my logic would be that the mycelium should stick to the substrate but I'm not sure if it's primordia or if it's mycelium running away from the bacteria.
Here's a close example of someone's grow I saw recently. Sometimes the threads are thicker and more creamy/goopy: Pic
My though process leads me to believe that doesn't look great but I'm curious to hear some more knowledgeable opinions.

It's parafilm, looks great, is easy to use but is way more expensive than clingfilm (saran wrap)

P9,
Hope you are well. Thanks again for making this post. I feel like its caused a bunch of us to rethink our shitzzz.
Say, how are those top grains colonizing? (the uncolonized millet seeds you collected)

I use the cheaper agricultural grade parafilm that isn’t paper wrapped, comes in 1” rolls. But yea, still more expensive than cling wrap but I hate cling wrap with a passion. Even for its kitchen uses, I’ll pay more for the press n seal to wrap my left overs.

Sorry to say but these don't look good to me. I would run them but I wouldn't hope for the best flush in the world before seeing green. The excess moisture and hazy cloud mycelium looks like a bacterial contamination in it.
