Ill be pumped if my feed store ever gets millet in stock. I swear its the only thing I cant get in bulk. Id buy online but I refuse to spend more than $15 for 50lbs of grain....Happy to waste thousands on other shit though.

lol it’s both. I haven’t washed a jar in forever.
But I do use a lot of vinegar in the pc we just have gross water here. If you drink it a lot you’ll get kidney stones from the minerals, and for some reason when it’s hot it looks like milk

Im looking into this at the very moment. I bought the under the counter system and the filters are shot after 1 month because our water is so bad.
I don't want to spend 79.99 a month just because our water is 1400 PPM and smells like Sulfur.

I didn’t even know the sulfur smell was a thing.
I should prob check mine cuz about a month ago I stopped using the sink to brush my teeth cuz the water started tasting or smelling like sulfur.
But the bathtub water is fine somehow

Yeah City water is treated with Chlorine and other stuff to take out the methane and sulfur, but this new house well water sucks. Then I got a TDS tester from Amazon for like 9.99, and the rest is a horrible rabbit hole. Back to the Clean Spawn Thread though!
I wonder if I can just soak my grains in this terrible water and skip the PC because I don't know how anything can survive this hellish water I have.

I’ll take my well water over city water all day err’ day!! Been used to the sulfur since I was younger, doesn’t bother me, it’s only every now and then that it gets strong but you gotta drain hw heater at least once a year to keep the sediment from building up too bad. Coldest water you can get! I know my well is about 335’ deep.

I've got some jars that I can shake tomorrow so I'll take video and add to the OP. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one thats fucked up so that I can cover how it should and shouldn't look.
If I don't find any bacterial ones maybe I can cough into one and check on it in a few days ; )

Just thought I’d share this perfect example of gross as fuck grain that previously I would’ve spawned, then felt like something was wrong with me because none of my tubs fruit.

Thanks for sharing. This is exactly why knowing the difference between healthy and bacterial spawn matters. Healthy spawn is the cornerstone of cultivation, without it all you'll cultivate is frustration.

I had to go search for that thread again to remember the brand he was using, which was the same 5kg Mother Earth.blocks I have.....said the package had info on the package about added micro bacterial blah blah.....my Mother Earth has none of this info... and also isn’t massively contaminating.

I appreciate the effort you've put into documenting this. It's been extremely helpful in my learning process.
What I'm not clear on is what's the difference between stressed spikey mycelial growth and healthy rhizomorphic growth in your grain spawn? The main difference I'm noticing is in the spikey pictures the growth is more erratic and non-uniform than the healthy examples. Is it that the mycelium is trying to move away from the contaminated grains whereas with healthy grain spawn the mycelium is sticking to the grain as opposed to "spiking" away from it?

This.
So as you've noticed above: the stressed mycelium actually looks stressed, as if it's forming little patches of myc crystals that are trying to escape through the glass as apposed to the normal rhizomorphic threads found in healthy mycelium:

Healthy rhizomorphic growth radiates outwards from the source of inoculation in a uniform and fluid manner. Though it exhibits a ropey structure it is homogeneous, uniform, and integral as apposed to the contrasting heterogeneous "spikey" mycelium that looks out of place. This stressed mycelium never seamlessly meshes with the surrounding colony as it grows, whereas the healthy mycelium will mesh seamlessly where it meets.
Incongruity is an indication that something is going on. Splotches of colour, odd growth patterns including uncolonized patches are all an indication that the colony has run into something that causes it's behavior to change. The examples shown in this thread are changes due to bacteria, however changes in growth can indicate an encounter with another species of mycelium, mold, or even environmental changes like temperature, or restricted GE.

This needs to be merged with the "dealing with contamination" noob stickies.
I was just drying a few lbs of grains getting ready to transfer some AA jars but now Im worried they're trash

Sweet post P9. I learned a lot. I knew that my previous mediocre grows were due to poor spawn, now I feel much more confident that I will be able to detect it in the jars. I have definitely see some of those signs and indicators and didn't know what I was missing.
