!!KING OYSTER ADVICE!!
    #27186876 - 02/04/21 06:05 PM (2 years, 11 months ago)

First time fruiting king oysters. Does this bag look ready to fruit? I believe that answer is yes. So what is the best way to fruit? The fruiting room is about 65F right now so should I open the bag and place it into fruiting or should I cut the bag down to about 1" above the sub and place it into fruiting. Or lastly, should I place the bag in the 65F temp and wait for pins until opening the bag.

Thank you all in advance for your replies!!

I thought you were supposed to case kings?

I usually put them in a cool room and leave sealed untill pins get fairly large.
Make sure there is quite a bit of air in the bag.

From what I hear you get a better yield by casing kings. I am glad you brought that up.

Quadman have you ever cased kings and if so was it worth it? What would be the best thing to case with? I have coir laying around.

I am putting them in the basement at 65F as we speak. I can always case later if I decide to.

I'm trying everything right now.. cut a slit in the bottom, cut the bag 1.5" above the surface, leave a tall bag with open top.. everything is developing pins but so many side pins!! It's crazy I'm gonna have to try casing to see if that stops the side pinning.

I have only grown one bag and was told to leave the bag closed as long as possible to develop thick stems from high co2. Open the top as they approach it. If you top fruit with an open bag, the caps should be a bit larger and the stem not as fat.

I also think colder temps were supposed to help with pin development. 65 was the top end with pins being hard to achieve above that temp.

Yo hold upppp. First off yes you need to wait for pins. But heres what I do for Kings and it works every single time. Once a bag is fully colonized (with or without pins) make a two inch slit near the top of the bag or really anywhere above the substrate. Kings react dramatically to the drop in CO2 from the slit and you should have excellent pinsets form within days. In my experience its always better to wait until pins have started forming before making the slit though. Once you have a pinset that youre happy with you can do a number of things for fruiting. I like to slice the bag 3/4 of the way around about two inches above the sub. This allows for enough air flow for Kings and lots of humidity. I have grown Kings in fruiting chambers and out of the bags in normal room conditions but surprisingly the SGFC always produces my absolute best fruits. Its just ideal for Kings. The high CO2 is perfect. Long story short, wait for pins, let pins develop by cutting slit, then once you are ready to fruit you cant mess it up. It all just depends on if you want big caps or meaty stipes.

Pinsets should look like this BEFORE you open the bag up.

I have cased,IMO it helps keep moisture up in the block. Kings require large amounts of water to make all those mushrooms. Casing with peat worked well for me. The culture I've been growing will fruit completely in vitro. Don't even bother casing just harvest and close bag back up.

Well I guess I'll need to get a culture and start messing around. I've fruited them without casing myself but not with results like this! Very inspiring. Anyone got a culture lol? Trade?

My technique is more similar to hummus' ..Now if you have any of those reusable zipties, which I know you do  , then I'd recommend opening the top at full colonization and inflating the top half of the bag, then reseal it.  Now, this not only helps trigger pins, but also allows the pins more room to grow in the bag, retains moisture, and above all saves space being able to leave it out of the grow tent until it's time to cut the bag!

Yes totally agree with letting air into the top of the bag and resealing, I didnt know how to put that into words without confusing anyone. Even if ya dont have ties just fold the top and tape it. Im telling ya though, make that slit its a game changer. You def do not have to case Kings. I guess if youre used to casing then go for it but its just extra work to me. I get really good results with masters mix.

Agree with Hummus and Harry. Air in, then cable tie reseal works well. Also, adding a snug elastic band around the bag near the top of the substrate can help reduce the side pins.

I just leave them on the shelf til it starts to pin then I cut the top off just below filter level and throw them in the growroom

:whatshesaid:  Yeah Kings are actually ridiculously easy. The slit works best to initiate pinning if the block seems sluggish. Or Ive also had situations where large clumps of primordia will form (like mounds of cauliflower) and the only way to get those clumps to the next stage is to make the slit or open and reseal. Good luck shroomsisay! Update with pics

Depending on the genetics you have some will form very thick fruit like mycelium up the side of the bag (very good for soup stock) and it will fruit from that.

Those big mycelium hunks are also excellent for making mushroom jerky.

Nope the culture throws huge caps they are messy looking from being in vitro. I don't care about the look, not selling and I like the large caps.

Another angle, note the 2 liter soda behind it.

Here is a pic of fruits in vitro. That is 32oz container sitting there for reference.
