quick WBS ?
    #2718316 - 05/23/04 12:57 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

This is going to be my first attempt at preparing grain jars and I just had a quick question about WBS.

I soaked for 24 hours, and just simmered it for about 50 minutes but the water ran kind of low for the last 5-10 minutes. I've got the WBS straining now and I picked up a handful and it felt kind of slimy. I was just wondering if that is normal, or if I messed it up and should start over or not?

You shouldn't start over, but you should rinse it after you simmer it to get the slimy coat off.

Also make sure you drain the excess water off of the seed for at least an hour or two. Otherwise it may be too wet.

I have noticed from my past experiences that if I soak overnight(approx. 12 hours),rinse, simmer for 30 minutes(any longer and my wbs grains explode too much after pc'ing),rinse while hot, drain for 20 minutes, then load into jars and pc at 15 psi for 90 minutes, that my jars colonise very rapidly. It seems to me that they have the exact amount of water needed. But this is my own experience and may differ from others.
Here is a pic of some PESA honey/water innoculated,at 8 days old!

Hi disturbed,
If you want to start over you can leave out the soaking and cooking.
I know that soaking and cooking WBS is an often used procedure.
I never read a good reason why it is nessecary to soak WBS, so I never did it. I mix the same volume of WBS and water (the measuring jar is about 200-250ml) and pressure-cook the whole thing in 700ml jars with polyfill-lids. Maybe you can get a higher moisture content with the soaking procedure, but it works great without. Water absorbed, no slimy things and fast. Best thing is to let the jars cool down in the pc over night.

Soaking is done to try and get the bad endospores into germinating and then the simmering is done to induce the water content, and the pc'ing is done to kill those endospores that just germinated from letting the wbs set overnight.Rinsing is done to wash away all the extra's that was added in powder form,as the additives in the wbs.

after rinsing it off, and letting it drain the slimyness is gone... I loaded some into a jar and shook it around, and it doesn't seem to be clumping, but it left some residue on the side of the jar... Is that normal or is that a sign that something has gone wrong.

If I do need to start over what should I do differently this time? Is there a certain tek you guys use?

I use this but I substitute WBS for the rye VVV

And believe me this tek is the best I have done yet.

My results so far VVVV

I am also a believer in not soaking. After getting similar results both ways, I think the quicker way is better. Screw soaking for 24 hours.

Read this thread if you really want to make WBS easy. I have used it since I first started growing.

I'm quite agree with wizard2k .
For the first time , i suggest u to follow magash tek (or other) , so u can see how grain should be .

But after some experiments , u should be able to find the right ratio water/grain directly w/out soaking nd simmering .
If u PCing 1h15 , endospores dont survive .
But its for jars , coz if u use more substrate like bags , then u must soak and simmer it .

AFOAF never soak or simmer for his 1/2 pint jars , but do it for his 4 pints bags .

Let me state this--MAGASH's rye tek is newbie friendly!
It may be overkill, but if you follow his tek you will succeed!

As for the endospores not surviving the pc-well,some can and do sirvive those temps and pressure.Thats why the 24 hour soak.To let them germinate then it makes them vulnerable to pc'ing-it kills them then. That's why we soak!

As for simmering, well I like doing that cause it puts just the right amount of water in the grain, there is no guessing and 9 times out of 10,it's perfect-In My Opinionated Experience.

edit=When you add the water-is it pre measued or eyeballed?Because the slightest difference in moisture content can affect the overall outcome of your grow-even 1/4 cc can be too much or not enough, and can cause slow to no growth at all.
But if it works I wont knock it-What works for one may not work for the other, right?

Thats a cool way to do it Doc34, but tell me this - are the ty vec cut to lid size and just placed on or could they be like glued on and useable everytime and is that bandade just cut to small proportion and put on the tiny hole! This will be my next venture!

I myself just drape the tyvek over the mouth of the jar and then I put on both lids and cut around the lid to remove the excess tyvek, its free so you dont have to be stingy with it.

I wouldnt glue it,it works great just sitting on there.

Sorry MAGASH,I dont use the bandaid!
I innoculate straight thru the polyfill, thru the tyvek, into the jar and place two coffee filters over the top of the jars and put them in the incubator.VVVV

And sometimes I even put alluminum foil on as an extra barrier.VVV

and my jars colonise completely in 8-10 days!

I never said it wouldn't work,I was stateing that for a newbie,it may be disastrous!

Yes I have tried it without soaking-they(jars)colonized a week later than they do now useing MAGASH's Tek.
I also tried it without simmering-same effect.
I also tried it by just loading and adding the water to the jars-I wont tell you those results, lol!

But in all I have found that MAGASH's rye Tek is a Godsend for me!

This is only based on my experience.
