Found today 02/02/21 in the Santa Cruz Mnts, CA. Habitat is Bay Laurel, Doug-fir, and Coast Live Oak. Obvious Hygrocybe that blackens.

could be, but looks more like Hygrocybe laetissima or Hygrocybe acutoconica to me.

Hygrocybe conica group
Alan corrected me a few days ago on MO, I was calling ones I found near SF H.singeri because I often use MRC as a guide. However I guess DNA is not sequencing matches with the original type so now it’s back to H. conica.

I read that too, but if I remember/understand correctly, he said it's very rare to non existant on the coast. Also, that it is more montane species.
I was going to write exactly the same comment as yours, but then i saw this is santa cruz mntns find, so maybe it's singeri after all.

i really thought it looked a lot like H. laetissima or H. acutoconica.
Can you guys point out what makes them obviously not those for future knowledge please? Thank you

Yeah I’m not sure, I still consider SC mountains as the coast.

elevation would be the biggest difference among others obviously but that is a pretty big difference.

H.laetissima, from what i see, is more red colored and it doesn't bruise black. Ussually it doesn't have witch hat appearence.
H.autoconica is pretty similar, so i don't know.
Sometimes it's just impossible to differentiate species without scope, hell, sometimes you can't tell them apart with scope. DNA sequencing is good, i don't understand it unfortunately. Hopefully some day i will.
