Pure honey doesn't kill mycelia, it can only stop the growth of the mycelium. This is because of the sugar concentration. The amount of sugar needed to stop mycelia growing would be 70% sugar, this is almost imposssible because sugar cristalizes at 65 %. The reason mycelia will stop growing is because the sugar holds on to water. The water stuck to sugar isn't availab;e for the mycelia. Mycelia needs this water to transport nutrients. So higher sugar concentrations take away the water needed to transport nutrients for mycelia and will cause slow growth not kill!!

You need a lot more diverse nutrients than sugar to get a shroom. This also won't work for the same reason that oak trees don't grow underwater. You need oxygen, balanced nutrients, proper moisture content, and a physical surface for the mycelia to grow on. You can get TONS of free-floating mycelia to grow in weak sugar water, especially with a bit of malt extract added....BUT... as bluhoney said, they can't form the physical network structure needed to start or support fruiting. You could grow gallons of mycelia water and drink it...enough will make you trip but its pretty nasty stuff. You also have a higher risk of contamination from bacteria which you can't see....no fun to be trippin and get food poisioning at the same time.

Has anyone ever tried filling a jar full of vermiculite and adding honey/malt water? Shit, honey is so selective when it comes to contaminants, it probably wouldn't even need to be sterilized. I wonder if it'd fruit. Hmm.. Maybe I should try.

Honey is selective when it comes to contaminants? Exactly how does it do this 'selecting'? Plain honey doesn't spoil because of the high sugar content ( or in other words it is a very hypertonic solution and therefore any contaminants entering the solution will be destroyed by dehydration as the moisture is 'sucked' out via cellular osmosis). This is also why honey is such a good 'preservative'. It's kind of like the pickling process only with sugar instead of salt, or sugar and salt. It's got nothing to do with honey being 'selective'.
Growing mycilium in honey water uses much water with a small amount of honey added. Not straight honey.
