powdered shrooms
    #2718217 - 05/23/04 02:22 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hi guys!
I guess you get asked this one alot, and the answer is probably on one of the FAQs so you might give me the brush off however...one airtight bag of semilanceata is now powder. Although I haven't labelled them I guess it's likely that the bagful was about 18 months old. None of the others have , so far, disintegrated. But I prefer my mushrooms to be integrated therefore can anyone help? I'm a U.K resident so will need to know if the substances recommended for desication are likely to be available here, also I would prefer them to be as organic as possible. I've never used a dessicant before so any advice will be gratefully received. Thank you! :sun:

Oh well I found the ShroomGod. Does anyone have anything to add on the subject of possible dessicant contamination ? Does anyone prefer to use an electric food dehumidifier, or have any recommendations about how best to set up your drying chamber ? How close to the dessicant material should your shrooms be ?
( P.S I don't care which forum you put this on I just want to rap about long-term storage )

I'll move this to cultivation, but throw in a few cents;
A common dessicant is calcium chloride, it comes in different pellet sizes and is available in 'home stores' [often near painting supplies]. I've heard of people using silica packets, brown rice, and other material. Regardless, if the drying chamber is kept dry [no fresh wet fruits placed inside] the chances of contamination are very slim.
Calcium chloride is a good place to start; search the faqs on dessicant/drying for more info.

Dry em any way you want. Then bag em and freeze em. You can keep them for years if they are frozen with very little loss in potency.

That's interesting I always freeze my amanitas ( not using a dessicant ) figuring that this was/is the way that the Siberian Shaman do/did it ( in the permafrost ), but I,ve never frozen semilanceata, assuming that their different biochemistry could mean degeneration. However thinking about it the ancients must have stored them somehow... Are you sure that there is no loss of potency when freezing "libs" ?

I get color changing silica gel by the bucket(online somewhere, I forget). You can get it in boxes at craft supply stores for drying flowers. I've never tested, but I think it pulls out more moisture than Damp-Rid, although there are prolly those whowill disagree.
Neither is very organic, but it doesn't touch what you are drying, it only sucks the moisture out of the air around it.

Silverwolf, you mentioned you'd prefer organic... I guess the food desicator is totally 'organic'... and they work a treat I'm told... only disadvantage is cost... but you could also use it to dry fruit !

Thanks for the help guys! ( No gender bias intended ). I have now defrosted the fridge and re-dried my libs; method: Place shrooms on carboard sheet covered in "silver" foil under a radiator . Place a second sheet of foil covered cardboard at an angle resting on the radiator above the shrooms to reflect the heat back on to them ( yeah when drying fresh shrooms you will need to turn/ "peel" them off, very gently, every now and then to prevent them sticking to the surface ). The libs were nearish "cracker-dry" before I froze them, I didn't feel I wanted to hammer them dry, they didn't feel spongy.
All rather "unscientific" I know, however If anyone is interested in hearing my method for amanita preparation, which is far more logical, I will expound.
I don't like the idea of putting any chemicals ( even alu foil can feel problematic ) near my shrooms, but especially feel alarmed by the idea of heavy metal proximity - there are enough nasty pollutants in the growing environment, like for instance depleted uranium ! - .
Also Can anyone tell me which brand of dehumidifier might be preferable and/or where I might purchase one in the UK/Europe ?

You shouldnt be using any heat to dry your shrooms as that will cause a loss of potency. Probably small, nonetheless.

All food dehydrators also use heat. I suppose if you refuse to let chemicals go near (they arent supposed to touch) your shrooms, heat is your best answer. Lay them over a fan first to get them mostly dry though. This will reduce the time needed in front of heat.

You should just use a tubberware container with desicant in the bottom (calcium cloride doesnt contain heavy metals, neither do most of the others except for the color changing beads which you can get them without) and chicken wire "table" to set the shrooms on above. There is no contact with the shrooms that way.

Yeah but heavy metals have vibrations man ( ever been to a B.O.C gig ?) and there is always the possiblity that precious shrooms may touch one of these substances ! Having said that however the answer would seem to be the production of a table of dessicants and shroom species giving the approxinate drying time for each substance and shroom ( by weight ), thus avoiding the necessity of the use of H.M indicators ( for those of us who really don't like them ! } Anyone ?

Well just get some Epsom Salt. Bake it to get the moisture out and use that as your dessicant. Works well.

silverwolf i take it you dont cook chicken in foil then. dont be daft tin foil aint gonna do you or your shrooms any harm unless you eat a roll thats bound to cut somin on the way out

and shrooms dont tend to absorb heavy metals anyway so what you on about  i use a 120mm fan blowing  @ 190cfm  to dry my shrooms and that works fine i just place them in a tub with fan on top whoa dry shrooms in no time.

Later NoG

I don't eat chicken and I do use silver foil about which, as Custer once said, "I have my reservations" ( see my previous posts ). :drama:
