Howdy. I've got 3 cakes fruiting, finally starting to produce some mushroos...but they're all growing sideways. I mean straight out towards the walls and the other cakes. Im not sure what the problem is, or if it's a problem at all...but its kinda wierd. All the pictures I've seen have them growing up. (if I were gay i could make a funny joke here...oh well) I'll try to get some pictures up in a little while, but you can understand what im saying. the're just growing straight out of the sides of the cakes.
They're wild Cubes, on BRF and Verm, 100% humidity. thanks a lot!

Are you using perlite for humidity? The reflected light off perlite can confuse the mushrooms a little.
It does not really matter if they grow sideways, as long as they don't squash against anything. You could try taping round the bottom few inches of your terrarium.

Make sure you have a light source coming straight down. If your cakes are on foil it can cause them to grow sideways because the light is bounced around. Also if you have ambient light coming in at all different angles it can cause the same problems.
It is normal for them to come out of the sides, they usually go out sideways at first and then start to curve up as they mature.

Ah, yes..I do have perlite, and the terrerium is inside another storage bucket so the light is quite ambient with no direct source. Is it a problem to have them grow this way?
I have noticed a that so far none of my mushrooms' caps have opend, they just keep growing longer and longer! I dont know if thats caused by the light... I'll have to re-think my setup if this is a big issue. thanks for the replies.

Its not a problem, mushrooms don't use light for energy, but they do grow towards it, give them a direct source and they will grow up straight towards it.
