So just do as I had suggested, spawn it to a shoebox and let it go, either you end up throwing it out or you get mushrooms.
The spawn honestly doesn't look bad to me.
I got way lucky with a recent culture of Burmas that's super fast, so do some observation on it while its in the shoebox.
Take notes, if it is contaminated you'll have documented learning material.

You couldn't imagine some of the ugliness I've had and my place is still good. I've had shit so ugly I just threw the whole fuckin tub away. I didn't even wanna attempt to wash it. I've got shoeboxes that are stained green from trich that still work perfectly. Don't know how but it does

Yeah determining if spawn is good or not has always been my toughest area.

As long as you’re doing the SAB right contams don’t matter, I had probably one of the worst possible scenarios for molds and did fine. There are threads of people posting the nasty spots the work in, mold all over the walls and stuff.

Working in spots like that will expose holes in your SAB game real quick too.

Do you guys always blame your inoculant or technique for bacterial spawn? I mean, if I was a noob that didn't know how to make clean inoculant or didn't trust my technique then sure, I'd blame myself.

Making clean/axenic inoculant is retarded easy, however I don't think it's easy to make perfect spawn simply because endospores are able to survive a PC cycle like a bitch from hell... bad prep or bad source for grain can do that for you easy, in my humble fucking experience.

I almost always have atleast some bacteria  when I use tsc oats. It doesn't matter whether I rinse them first, boil the shit out of them and pc them for 3 hours. On the other hand, if I use grocery store grade grains such as rice and popcorn, I see no signs of bacteria in my spawn. Not that the slightly bacterial oat spawn causes any problems during fruiting but it is a nuisance.

I had the same issue with oats from tsc. I would also get some bacteria from undercooked wheat, so far I've had no issues with millet.

All I used are tsc oats. Never really had a problem from them that wasn't my fault. I can get wheat for the same price but I don't like the way it colonizes, just like white millet. They never look like they are done colonizing

That's normal with millet. If it wasn't for the price that's what I'd rock

I always assume it’s my fault unless it’s an obvious pattern.

I had this one type of wbs that would go bacterial after about 10 days every jar. No idea what was in it that caused that.

I’m sure sometimes it’s not caused by me but when I’ve got all the prep type stuff dialed in it’s something I messed up more often than not.

I'm not really sure how it could be my fault with the tsc oats. Its not like I have a bunch of busted grain and they aren't over hydrated. Everything else is exactly the same. The only variable is the type of grain. That's it. I have used the same culture and method of inoculation. I see a difference with a slower colonization rate with visible bacteria when it comes to feed grade oats vs grocery store grade grains.

Would be fun to see peoples g2 spawn under a scope and see if anyone has zero bacteria.

Now who wants to go first

I'm ordering a scope soon, I'll be running almost everything under it. My primary focus will be on bacteria present in spent  exotic substrate, but sampling random mycelium to see how clean it really is sounds interesting as well.

I highly doubt anyone has zero bacteria in their spawn regardless of what type of grain they use and how they prep it. Just to be clear, I wasn't stating that the grocery store grains don't have bacteria. It's just that it is not noticeable

It would be interesting to id whatever bacteria is tagging along without causing much harm, if there actuallyis any. We know what kinds to avoid, are there any bacteria hitching a ride without issue though? Probably pointless to know, still interesting though.

are we talking bacteria from the grain not being fully sterilized or from inoculation? Or from the culture used?

I see very little bacteria on agar if ever(unless cleaning up spores or clones) and although noccing up bags is much riskier I don't think I'm adding much bacteria if any during inoculation.

So then insufficient sterilization? And how do we get spawn without bacteria? Grocery store grain or rice?  And is it worth it in the end to have bacteria free spawn?

I use wheat primarily but I was using oats from a feed store and saw similar results to wheat. Oats just looks less colonized and made less thick of colonies olverall compared to wheat. But a mix of the two was pretty nice as well.

I had serious bacteria issues from insufficient sterilization because my pressure gauges on my sterilizers were failing and reading a higher pressure than they were actually at. Something like 1/3 to 2/3 of my grain was going bacterial all of a sudden. This is the second time that this has happened so I knew right away what the problem was but the first time around I thought it was me or my innoculant because it wouldn't show it's face until the myc started colonizing. So it took a lot of troubleshooting to narrow the problem down. Thought it was my filter for a bit and I ordered a new one that is still in it's box as I found the pressure gauges were the real issue.

I saw someone post here(I think here and can't remember who) some time ago asking about bacteria not showing up until after being inoculated and that is certainly the case for me. It shows no signs of problem(or smell until the myc starts colonizing it.

Off topic, but if you're running something like a Presto, it's a good idea to just go by the sounds it makes at a given PSI. My guages are broken, but I just listen to the weight rock and hiss and dial down to where I know 15-18PSI would be.

I think it is common knowledge that us home cultivators cannot completely sterilize our grain with a pc. We are merely creating a window of opportunity for our culture to get a foothold on the substrate before anything else has a chance to grow on it. We can reduce the bacteria enough to have great success but cannot eliminate it completely.

What's wrong with 99.997? Most people complain about 99.97, and purchase 99.99 instead, which is of course less than 99.997.
