Having a level tamped down sub is a tough spot to work on. We're all human or at least you all are idk about me, I might be human. We make mistakes human or otherwise and you can't always be so level with your subs. I myself have even had really "hilly" subs that don't colonize proper. Just another item that takes practice and experience combined with read knowledge.

This tub was weighted with a grate on top for the first 60 hours of colonization. Then the grate and weight was removed. Its kinda hard to see cause they are albinos but everything that looks like a lil knot is actually already a pin. Seems the scoring and weight helped the pin set for this MS tub.
are you saying the grate and weight pushed the lid down, sealing it more?
He means actually on the sub surface.
I picked off pins before dunking a cake for second flush before reading I probably shouldn't have. Have I just picked off my second flush?

nice sub bw86, bet those divets the grates left will make nice micro climates. Have you had good luck with more condensed substrate? A lot of older comments say to leave it loose and fluffy, just gently tamped down to level on the top. I used to pack it as hard as I could and didn't have a problem, but stopped once I read it's bad.

I use a piece of leftover board from my FH. I made a handle and everything. Hardly ever use it. I used to make the wife use it for when she helped with mono making cause her shit would be wonky as hell. Then I felt like she was packing it too hard and never have it back to her, damned if I do, damned if I don't

I'm a germaphobe. I'd have to glove up to tamp the sub down. Even then I think I'd have to stop, sanitize my tool, and use it instead of my hands. Doing mycology and working around germophobic behaviors is fun.

Don't get me started. I've done PC cycles for just one small shot glass to make a spore syringe with. I Had just forgotten to put the dish in with the syringe itself while PCing, so I was forced to run another cycle.

I’ve literally sneezed boogers into a sub as I was spawning the tub. No fucks given.

I heard the clean mycelium will outrun the contamination as long as you spawn it to something massive like a 110qt mono.
