King oyster bag

This is my first shot doing gourmet bags. I was told to wait until it’s pinning to cut the bag down.
Does this look right so far?

Hard to tell from a single top pic. Looks fine from that angle tho... However, it appears that you're opening the bag to take the pic? If I'm correct, don't do that! Just leave it closed and sealed until you see some decent fruits reaching up. Kings respond better to higher co2 levels so don't worry.
Sorry,I don't have any bags going at the moment to reference, but I'll usually let the fruits grow a couple inches before cutting the bag down to their caps, then place at the bottom of my greenhouse where there's the least airflow.
This was the only pic I've taken(fuck this tablet) but I usually get a few of these off a 5lb block! 8+oz fruits!

Looks good to me. Dont worry about opening the bag, its fine. I prefer kings grown in the same conditions as ostreatus, in other words with plenty of airflow. I like the big caps better than tall stems
the positive reason to leave the bag on right now is to keep humidity high so you can get a good pin set. I have my bags open on the top in my grow chamber so they can sense a drop in co2 and start pinning. What is your grow chamber like A.k.a?

Here’s a shot of the bag right now it’s 80/20 hwfp/bran. I figure cuz it’s colonized opening it doesn’t matter anymore.

Ok thanks guys. I’ve previously only run Kings once in a shoebox of hwfp/coir over summer. It colonized fine and then sat for two months I guess it was too hot to fruit. Then I put it in the fridge at night for a week and it finally fruited something.

I need to build a tent for gourmets cuz I have very low rh. I have a small chamber I made for pans that I used to run lion mane in before and it did really well. I was hoping to try and fruit these mainly in the bag this time though.
I’ve also got a big tub of black pearl on hwfp cased with coir that’s been colonized for a few days.

Can it be too cold for these two species to fruit?? They’ve been in 35-50f lately.

Opening the colonized bag isn't going to be an issue with contamination. I say "don't do it" to avoid losing humidity/moisture!
Personally, I LOVE some king oyster "scallops" , so I always prefer more stem than cap.
I've never had my tent below 50f so I can't attest to the colder temps, but I don't think it'd be an issue for fruiting conditions. Did your bag colonize that cold also?

Do you ever case them or top with coir?? I see a lot of that with kings.
I colonized the bag at about 70f.

Nice. I would love to see how that black pearl tub does. Colder temps are fine for kings but they will grow slowly at that low of temp.
You should be able to fruit them in the bag without problems, might open a small hole for extra o2 but not sure if necessary.
I never cased any kings but i think its done to help with pinning only... to help hold humidity before it pins. but if you can keep RH high you wont need it.

I def prefer a stipey King. You can scallop them or "pull" them with a fork for excellent bbq sandwiches. Id also say opening the bag isnt such a great idea as you want CO2 to build up inside, then when your'e ready for pins you can just make a small slit to induce pinning. And those temps are fine, Kings are extremely tough. I'd try to keep it between 40-50 though. 35 is getting really cold for anything to grow.

I do mostly stir fry mushrooms but I would like to try pulled mushrooms. Do you have a recipe you use?
Even in high o2 environment kings still have a lot of stem.

these are growing at the same time and you can see the difference in stipe size. I think they look a little better with a bigger cap if you're taking them to the market.

Yep so all you want to do is harvest, let them sit out on the counter for a few hours (get them nice and dry). Then just run a fork along the stipes to shred them up. Kings shred beautifully. Then Ill take all the pulled mushroom and marinate in a bag with some spiedie sauce (gives it a nice tang). When you're ready just drain and fry in a pan, I add a few squirts of sweet baby rays once the mushrooms are browned, delicious sandwich and wayyy healthier than pork. Just dont add the bbq BEFORE you cook the shrooms. I also recently ventured into the art of making jerky with Kings that came out really well.

Yeah those bags are badass I’ve never seen them fruited from holes like that.
My shoebox got a whole lot of fae, idk if that’s why they came out so fat or what but they don’t look like other ones I’ve seen.

I guess this is why people prune pins huh?

These are very reactive to light. I didn’t turn the leds on until a couple days ago and they immediately developed caps and shapes. I think next time I’ll turn the lights on way earlier and prob end up with fewer pins.

Interesting idea, why do you think light would make fewer pins?

Well I don’t know how these grow enough to say for sure yet but it seems like it just started swelling up and sort of stacking knots on knots on knots until I added light. Literally 12 hours later pins were taking shape and tons of caps were forming.
I’ve only run them once before in a tub and something similar happened. It swelled up into like golf ball sized blobs that just sat there until I gave it more light and then it turned into fruit bodies with caps.
