Grate cassings + Substrate handels 2

When I saw Enigma I was fascinated. A beautiful monstrosity. While fishing around to catch the whale myself I was thinking. Where does it start? where does it end? I could for sure use an electric turkey knife and just have a go.I started to smoke on an idea to use chicken wire on the surface to make a definitive distinction between the surface and the outside environment. It's also annoying to get substrates out since i don't use liners. So, im workin on that too. I started off this plan with metal in mind but after making a handful of custom metal cassing grates I decided that rout was not for me. I found relatively inexpensive rubber shtuff instead. Despite not having the enigma I decided to get started on trouble shooting different combinations of screens with normal cubensis. Even though this is potentially for one flush wonders. I would love for other members of the community to try it out in the beta stage.
I think with the right combination of screen sizes/ amounts/ heights we can get a canopy that is easier to harvest.
Place in substrate handles- If they don't stand up on their own just use some clips.Pour your spawn in.
Custom re-usable tub grate(s). I did some with one grate and a few with multiple. These were al just laid on top. A knife across the top is the idea but a knife slid between two sheets would work even better

Two screens/ close up covered with substrate

Some with tubs weighted on top of the grates to embed the grates slightly into the sub.(see top)

What?!?!
You gotta be kidding me lol, I was JUST game planning this next spawn run and had the idea to use window screen as my liner because I LOVE letting my subs resoak the condensation water that "going commando" can allow, but also love the ease of harvesting and pulling out subs and disposing of them using either trash bags like Eats Streamliners, or precut liners like filthy does except I make handles and slits running across the bottom to let it drink in at least some of the condensation returning some moisture to the sub. The more moisture a sub can retain and reuse the bigger the flushes/fruits and then it hit me as I sat there cutting more fucking liners...
I could just use window screen! It allows for lifting the sub out, it allows the sub to continuously re-absorb it's own water, and they are reusable!
And then this morning here you are with something VERY similar. My thought was actual window screen across the bottom though as with such small holes it would extract/lift out a much cleaner sub, with such large holes it will leave more mess in your tub, especially ones that fail before colonizing. It is amazing to me how often people come up with parallel ideas about the same thing at the same general time here in the shroomery.
I just had the same thing happen that someone posted an agar biopsy tool they made similar in concept to the one I made and have been using for about 10 months, now this, and I thought I was so slick lol
I love the idea you have about the grated harvesting though! I would say that two layers is ideal and then you can harvest using a thin wire with two wooden ends like a garotte! Murder that harvest in a single pass!
Genius!
I am DEFINITELY doing this. When you get up to high double to low triple digit tub setups anything that makes life easier is a GO. I don't even have to see the end result to know that this will work. I might get some larger grates for the tops of mine but do the two layers so I can harvest with a string/wire.
In prison we cut chairs in half with dental floss...
Edit: Fuck it, I'm gonna +5 you on this one too. Dope shit my man. Thanks for sharing!
Edit, Edit: Never mind I can only rate you once, but goddamnit you deserve two.

Give it a go!A screen on the bottom would probably work even better. Im pretty sure my sides are going to rip when I pick them up since there is substrate between the grate and the walls/floor. The idea still needs some practice. I just bought a plethora of different screens. simultaneous invention is quite curious for sure.Im glad I can provide some food for thought and some encouragement to get started.

Bump.
Everyone got on your visually pleasing / more entertaining pseudocasings thread, and virtually no response here.
I think people are lost in the sauce on this one.
This double grate idea on top of the sub is giggity-giggity-gangster.
I went and got some of that green plastic fencing material that has bigger holes. The wire, cheese-cutter, garotte style harvest will cut an entire sub in five seconds in a single pass and leave no stumps behind, and a still intact sub surface.
And guess what? I realized yesterday, when you do the double grate after you cut the first flush, you will still have an intact grate to act as your guide for cutting the second flush in a single pass as well, and then you toss the sub and rotate in the next one.
This idea makes two flush harvests buttery smooth.
Like I said, I know the mechanics of this are going to work for sure. Dental Floss vs Chair? Dental floss wins. Wire cheese cutter between two grates that guide the cuts? I will harvest 5 tubs in the time it used to take me to harvest 1.
Just wanted to kick this back to the top, because I know someone out there will see the value in this so immediately like I did, and just missed it yesterday.
Thx for sharing BW!

Agreed this has more practice value and is more exciting than the pics thread. I would have bumped it myself but I have yelled at too many noobs about bumping their own threads within 24 hours. I have some of that green fencing too. Maybe that with a false bottom. Then its getting even more complicated. I'll edit this post with some pin pics from today in a lil bit.

Besides the green fencing stuff for the top grates, I also got this beefier screen that will hold up to repeated lifting of substrates. Regular fiberglass screens would tear sooner than later, and the aluminum ones would tear your hands up unless you have a way to finish the edges.
This stuff is supposed to stand up to Fido, is much thicker, but still plastic and easy to the touch.

For the top layers I put a bag of grain in the tub until it was the substrate height I wanted. Then made a template with cardboard at that height. I just got a bunch of these two screens
They are replacement screens for an Excalibur dehydrator. Classic plastic and silicone. Im gonna try them next.

I like that last one with the two screens stacked up evenly. I feel like that’ll work best if you’re gonna try pushing one to slice the shrooms off.
Now I hope you get a super fast culture so we can see what happens. So much waiting

Looks like the grate really needs to sit snug on the surface. This tub isn't exactly working according to plan don't worry there are plenty more.
I think the ones with a thin layer of coir/verm over the two screens are gonna be a step in the right direction.

Substrate handles work great. Just harvested the first grate cassings. It was a lil messy but it worked like charm. I slid the knife between the two layers then was able to pluck the fruits right off the grate. It was hard to get visually pleasing pictures from my friend who I i asked to take the photos. I'll get better pictures as I do more.

A lot to work on. I'm happy with the first results as my harvest time was less than half of the time it is normally.

Go shopping for Rebar Chairs and tie wire. ALso someone mentioned aluminum, but remember the mushies will digest that shit in a hurry. I would stick with stainless, plastic or poly. I wonder if there is a silicon based grate you can PC?
This is awesome I can't wait to see what the new standard is going to become for harvesting!

How did this grate system perform with development of fruits in comparison to a naked sub surface?
I saw your casings thread you said the grate tubs didn't do so well?
