Anyone else growing culinary herbs? They are fun to grow and very useful in the kitchen. I really like the Mediterranean herbs. Rosemary, oregano, marjoram, sage, and basil are my favorites. They all require little water. They taste great and are healthy to eat. In my climate they are evergreen, but basil dies in the winter. And they bloom for much of the year. Bees love the flowers. And the aroma is great in the garden and in food.
The best one I grow is Italian Oregano (Origanum x majoricum). It is a hybrid between Oregano and Marjoram, and the flavor is a cross between the two. It is real easy to grow. Stays green and vigorous looking with little care. It gets picked so much but always seems to be getting larger! Its covered with white flowers for half of the year and honeybees are always on the flowers. It shines for me in the garden and in the kitchen. I use it the most for cooking. The flavor is so good!

Most of the classic Mediterranean herbs dont need that much water. Some herbs like mint do have higher water requiremwnts, so just do a little research and there will be many choices. Besides the herbs I mentioned in the first post, other good options would be thyme, tarragon, dill, and lavendar. And there are many more to choose from just depending on what you like.

Nice thread. I grew some cilantro and oregano this summer. Nothing special. I like to eat a few leaves raw now and then.

Nice! Will the Oregano survive the winter in your climate?
Here are some Basil cuttings that I'm rooting in water:

I'm from Asia. We use herbs native to our lands. Curry leaves, pandan leaf, coriander are very popular in our area

Rosemary and Italian Oregano are the ones that seem most indestructible in my yard and that taste the best to me. I keep cooking with those 2 more and more.

IME basil is temperamental, without pretty specific conditions it will have a hard time.
Thyme has always been a must for me, it seems to grow like a weed in most climates.
It also adds excellent flavor to roasts, chicken and steaks.

I tried growing thyme years ago but managed to kill it somehow. I should probably give it another shot. My family never cooked with it much, but it is one of those classic herbs that lots of people love. My family always used oregano the most for cooking, so maybe thats why I love the taste of oregano so much.
Here in the desert where I live Basil is very easy to grow. It holds up to the heat and dry conditions quite well. But on the coldest winter nights it usually gets killed off unfortunately. If only there was a strain of Basil that could survive the winter!

The cool fall weather has finally arrived in the desert. I'm using this time to plant some more herbs. I planted 2 more Italian Oregano and 1 more Arp Rosemary. I just divided small starters out from the mother plants I already have.
Also planted 2 Mexican Tarragons. I found a nice good sized potted Mexican Tarragon for sale at a nursery. So I divided it in 2. Hopefully they do well. I love the taste of Tarragon, but my chickens are rough on young plants and the brutal summers are tough for them too. Wish me luck!
By the way, dividing established perennial herbs is a great way to propagate them. In the fall or spring you just look for rooted stalks growing on the edge of the plant, and you dig that section up, being careful to get as much roots as possible. It works great and its free!
