Big shoutout to whomever posted the brewer's bags ages ago. Bought a few of them, made strainers out of 5 gallon buckets, absolutely love em! Amazon link

Sourced in Sri Lanka and sold by a Vancouver company. $150 and for every $1000 spent at the shop I get $50 credit. That Plantonix ain't a bad backup option tho if this is subpar. Fuck exo-terra

Brew bags are dope AF thats how I've been straining 30 myco qts of millet at a time.

I've been getting all my Coir online from Petco. (6) 3 packs with free shipping and another 15% discount if you set up automatic orders that you can alter at anytime. Works out to $7.11 per 3 pack.

I weigh my coir out to ~750g per tub. The cocogro ran $19/5kg and this stuff is $15/5kg. I'll stick to the hydro shops over the pet stores. I barely scratched the inventory with 10 blocks, shop must've had 100 on the shelves

Here's my latest tool of the trade.

I built this nifty little gadget last night.  It's an agar transfer tool with a built in extractor.
I was inspired by D3monic's beautiful transfers made with a leather hole punch, which I thought was quite forward-thinking, but at the same time I felt that still needing the scalpel to actually make the transfer and therefore needing two tools to make each transfer was taking a step back.
I wanted to design something that could do both, so this is what I came up with.

I first designed it in my head, then built it.
I thought it was a revolutionary idea, but turns out something very similar already exists, as a cork borer, which I only found out existed afterwards.  But whatever, shut up, mine is better.

So much for thinking I was going to patent this shit and become a millionaire though.
Athough as far as I know cork borers come in two separate pieces and are not spring-loaded single units like this.  Hmmm.  Please don't patent my idea and get rich off of it.  Or at least hook me up with royalties or something, you greedy bastards.

I haven't actually used it yet as I just designed and built it last night, but I think it should work pretty sexily.  The only slight concern I have is that the walls of the punch (stainless steel straw) might be a bit too thick/not sharp enough and that it might pull or tear the mycelium instead of cutting it,  but we shall soon find out.

I'm very much looking forward to trying it!

Of course!  Wouldn't be of much use otherwise.
Both the punch and the extractor are made of stainless steel.

Yes...

I flame the blunt tip and the ram rod each transfer.

It has a fast cool down time.
You just don't want to put heat on the plastic luer lock.

I wrap allot of very fine copper wire at where the metal tube connects to the plastic and that acts as a heat sink.

Also I keep three blunt tips In a glass tube filled with alcohol for storage.

I flame 3 of the blunt tools and always have two cooling down as I'm using the third one, that way I always have one ready to go without the wait.

The Idea behind using The blunt tip Is for very small transfers.

If you have a tool that Is too big It has a long cooled down time and Takes forever. So It seems more prudent to use a flamed scalpel...

Looks awesome. I bought a cork borer for $5, but yours looks way cooler and I may copy it. One thing these don't do however is flip the agar piece face down, like how D3monic does. makes the agar look cooler too IMO witht the hollow center. Wonder if you could achieve this by putting the poker inside your unit firmly against one side, so when it pokes the agar it'd poke out one side first, allowing you to flop it out upside-down.

So I just tried my contraption and I couldn't be more pleased.  It works very well!

Ahhh, this is where you're wrong!
So, because the upper cap is just supported by the spring, the rod in the center naturally favors one side when you push down on it, so it actually pushes the core out sideways (partially), so you can easily decide which face you want to put down.  And even if it happens to come out and make contact with the agar upside up, the rod extends far enough past the tip of the bore that I can easily use it to gently flip it over.

Don't worry, I will not be selling your idea. I am definitely stealing it for myself though. Designing a 3d printed handle for it now. Would love to put a luer lock on the end so I can change sizes if needed.

The straw on this nozzle doesn't quite reach the bottom of the bottle. I've been meaning to find a longer stay to cut and replace it with.

I use the nozzle from the cheap cleaner spray bottles at Walmart. I’ve got quarts of iso and the hose is like an inch too long so it just snakes around at the bottom.

I got sick of folding paper towels and holding the iso upside down with them over the mouth real quick.

This baby is a metered spray bottle of Dawn dish soap that has the added benefit of being a PERFECT metered misting spray bottle for ISO once you use it.

Once I saw a metered soap bottle I jumped on it because back at the time I had just been looking at buying a metered spray bottle by itself online for $everal more bucks than this one that is the same quality and you get a whole bottle of soap in the deal to boot!

Having a fine easily controlled mist will save you so much iso, and paper towels etc. I couldn't wait and dumped the soap into a standard dispenser forgoing the "foaming action" so that I could get straight to using it for misting my iso to my little heart's content. Been using the same one for over a year and it is still like new.

I can't recommend it enough. Head on down to your local big box and grab one. Or three just incase they stop making them, but right now? You're golden.

I think I am going to add a couple to my shopping list now that I mention it.

Sorry for the double post lol, I just decided not to wait till tomorrow to post this as I didn't want it to look like I read this thread then went and made my own version the next day and posted it when it was done.

I thought I was pretty slick too.

Mine has been in action for about a year (about the same time I found that metered spray bottle coincidentally) in it's current form and has worked flawlessly. Agar work is a dream with this puppy. I was thinking now that my tool has stood up to the wear and tear that I would make half a dozen prettier looking ones and post a tek/giveaway.

Nope. I don't think anybody is going to get rich patenting this puppy lol. The concept is around in so many fields, this is just a tweak to make it fit agar work.

These biopsy transfers and getting real small exact selections from your plate offer a uniform pattern for growth to jump off of on the next plate and make your job of eyeballing growth patterns and the strongest edge of a plate and other things SO much easier. Not to mention it's about the minimum amount of movements/motions you could hope for which is always a plus for sterile tek. Biopsy styles of transfers when done this small are also AWESOME for narrowing down your genetic profile as well. I love this little guy.

I like how yours is a bottom press action though.

I got a nice snug fit using an 1/8th inch long drive pin punch from harbor freight, coupled to a wide gauge blunt tip oil dispensing needle I used for LC when I was experimenting with that. Can't remember the exact size but can look it up tomorrow if people are interested.
