PF Tek Inoculation location

I followed the PF Tek guide and had a question about inoculation location. Does it need to be on the side of the jar?
I did a single hole in the center of the lid because I wanted to avoid contamination as much as possible. However, I injected the spores directly down into the center of the substrate. I'm worried this will be an issue.
I waited about 10 days, didn't see any growth in any of the jars so I opened one up and dug around in there a little bit and saw nothing at all.
I'm wondering if I should get additional spores and inject along the sides of the jars?

That's why we say to inject down the side. You can see if anything is growing. Injecting down the center leaves you the center colonizing and you not seeing anything on the sides for awhile and giving up. 10 days isn't that long to wait, around that time if you see anything it's just the beginning stage of barely a white puff. You can wait and see if anything grows, if you plan to redo and put holes around the edges you'll have to PC them again. If I was you, I'd go buy more jars and do another dozen.

no that's not an issue. some people inject in the centre so they know when the cake is fully white it's entirely colonized.

I've experimented with both inoculating down the center and on the sides. I prefer the sides because I get a quicker view of the myc growing (I usually see it within 3 days of inoculation).
Down the middle I didn't see growth for a long time (because it was obviously working its way from the center outward). But it colonized within the same time frame and I didn't have any issues.
So it seems to be a matter of preference. Although I like to have 2 inoculation points just incase one doesn't take.

should be fine, but don't noc the same jars you've already done. Just prep some fresh jars. I tried that once or twice when stuff appeared not to have worked and ended up just rotten

Having a single whole instead of four isn't going to affect the gas exchange?

It shouldn't. It doesn't take a lot. GE issues usually come up when there's way too much filtering and the air can't really flow through it any more. Like trying to breath through a shirt vs trying to breathe through 20 shirts.

Thank you. It make sense that a large whole would provide the same amount of GE.
Reading the updated pk-tek, I've got the impression that the holes should be as little as possible to prevent contamination.

not so much contams. Your dry verm layer is what prevents contams. Holes only matter as far as; you don't want them so big that the verm layer falls out or shifts around too much.
