You read that right, we are going to block out the sun.

Don't exaggerate. It is only a few experiments to investigate the properties and effects of aerosols in the stratosphere. They are done at a very, very small scale. Nowhere near to cause any significant disturbances. And no, they are not going to block the sun. Unless you characterize casting a shadow with your finger as blocking the sun.

The goal of the experiments is to be able to block the sun and "cool the earth down". Or do you think they're just doing it for fun?

The more important question, who do THEY think they are that THEY get to make decisions like this?

Ain't not gonna happen. Do the numbers and calculate the amount of material needed. And the energy needed to deliver them to the stratosphere.

Casting a shadow with my finger would definitely be considered blocking the sun to whatever is small enough to be in that shadow.

The repercussions of this are terrifying, but let's ignore that so we can keep consuming and living our life of convenience!

Thats a double negative, so it IS gonna happen?

Kidding aside, I hope you're right. I'm not into geoengineering. Why not put that effort into sustainable energy?

Not to mention the vast amount of research needed to ensure that aerosols do not adversely affect the ability to communicate with satellites, the ability to perform radar observations of asteroids and near-earth objects, and the ability to observe celestial objects that all ground-based telescopes can image through the atmosphere.

Beyond the billions of dollars worth of space research equipment, there are trillions of dollars worth of commercial and military capabilities that could be affected by placing a layer of particulate into the upper atmosphere. It's good research into methods of combatting climate change, but will be exceedingly difficult to implement in the near-term, and as others have stated, will probably be too monetarily and energetically expensive to implement in the long term.

This shit is very real.

I hope Bill Gates has a fucking stroke and dies. Seriously.
