Nah I totally feel you on that. Lots of questions in my head about it. Sterilization would definitely have to be on point. But I'm curious. It's an old friend that runs a brewery and I totally just happened into the circumstance. Not sure I would ever go out of my way to look for spent grains but if it works out it would be cool on several levels. If not, whatevs I got WBS for DAAAAAYYYYYYSS.

Plus I dunno, I like to tinker with shit find ways to do things that aren't the way to do those things. I have an induction coil to "flame" my blades and a vacuum chamber to hydrate my cakes; I'm just weird teapot with too much .

I've been using the 10lb block of Kempf coir. Its like 20 bucks on Amazon. I dont do anything large scale so it fits my needs and usually shops to my house in a day or 2.

No but this comes out to 2.88/brick and you don't have to spent $150. I would say that is worth the extra $.60/brick.

Eco Bricks Amazon

Wait, i did my math wrong.... I was going by pound, not brick.
150/50 = $3 per brick.
26/9= $2.88 per brick. This is actually cheaper.

Eh 3 bucks a brick is still expensive. 5kg blocks at 12 bucks from the grow store
for me make 10 tubs. So thats $1.20 per tub. A third of the price for better
quality coir is :hellyeah:

What size tubs are you rocking Nate?

Following a standard bucket tek, I can make about 8 tubs with a 5kg block.

What's your recipe sir?

You can always do Catdick's from Oak trees.

Joking, reference to an experiment I did last spring.

I use 66qt and 58qt tubs. I put 10qts of verm per 5kg block and thats about all i measure.

I put enough sub in each tote to make a 2"-2.5" sub once spawn is added.
That gets me 10 tubs. Once you been in this hobby a minute you'll see that exact
measurements are hardly necessary.

You all need to prepare for a coco coir shortage - boats coming from India are prohibitively expensive so it’s either a price hike or supply chain disruption coming soon. Take this from someone who imports it by the container for his day job...

Already a head of it. I use bestcob corncob horse bedding pellets. Corn is abundant in the US and produces alot of biproduct. Corncob is made of the same stuff coir is made of; a combination of lignin and cellulose. I can get 40 lb. bags for less than $10. 1 dry qt equals 5 qts of substrate when hydrated. 1 qt weighs around the same as a small brick of coir. It doesn't hold as much water as a brick of coir but the prep is just as easy. I just add the pellets to a pot of boiling water, put the lid on and let it cool.

I will admit that I haven't tried it on its own. I usually add a brick of coir and 2 qts of corncob pellets to 6.5 qts of boiling water.

You had me until you said it doesn't hold water as well, which is of course one of the main roles of the coir and what allows us to get the kinds of flushes we do.

I am very much looking forward to a write up and side by side comparison if you are ever feeling froggy enough to run some straight corn waste tubs next to some straight coir tubs with the same clone culture.

Shit I'll even do it with you. I am intrigued.

Takers?

Here’s that write up from bw about how to use spent brewers grains for anyone interested.

I bookmarked it a while ago but haven’t gotten around to trying it yet, but it seems like a cool way to reuse!

Thanks mind, I'll give that a read too. Looks like this might be easier than I thought.

EZPZ, I love doing shit like that. As soon as I have some spawn ready, I'll happily do a comparison.

Can’t really say without breaking some site rules but it’s where they’re bought from and even that’s kind of pushing it.  But I feel like a little digging and you could figure it out.. I’ve used the abbreviation myself in reference to a grow so I’m not going to straight come out and say it.

I searched a few times but couldn't find anything so just thought I'd ask. Anyway thanks for the clarification!

I have a question about using spawn bags. I recently tried to PC my first couple spawn bags using sawdust/woodchips. These are 'large bags' (Large Size 8" X 5" X 19",0.5 Micron Filter). I can fit 3x in my presto 23-quart at a time. I've followed the tek on these forums but having trouble.

It seems the bags are ballooning up during my PC cycle and rupture. Not all of them rupture, but at least one each time I've tried this tek. Am I folding the bag wrong? Not enough pressure can escape the micron filter? IDK what I'm doing wrong.

Also - When sealing these bags with a heat sealer how many seconds on the seal is recommended? Thanks for the help.

First ever attempt at fruiting has begun

10 240ml brf cakes dunked and rolled and now in an unmodified tub following the watertub tek. Stardard newb placement of a hygrometer in the tub.

I've misted the shit out of them and can't get them to glisten or look wet. I guess they are ok though.

Grains are currently on the boil ready to be inoculated in the morning for my next experiment.

Nice. Go ahead and take that hygrometer out before it breaks. They still don't look very moist to be, maybe a heavier mist just to start. You can also cram those cakes closer together, being close encourages a little microclimate between the sides.
