Jiaogulan ,Wild Maca, Ashwagandha...
    #2715177 - 05/22/04 06:14 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I purchased packets these seeds today and plan on maintaining a fairly steady supply of Jiaogulan ,Wild Maca, and Ashwagandha because they are reported potent adaptogens as well as have many beneficial effects including stimulant effects and general balancing and improving one's body in many ways.I was wondering if anyone has used these plants and if so if they worked as well as the reports say and I was also wondering if anyone has grown them before and if so,is there anything I need to know about growing them that differs from most plants.

I have seen maca sold in capsule form which is surprising as it is used as a food in Peru and a typical dose would be 10 grams. An extract would be pointless as you can't cram all the goodies into a small pill.

I have some Ashwagandha extract, but I haven't really used it yet. It recommend using fresh plant material as the extract is quite hard to handle -it absorbs water from the air more readily than any other extract I have seen, as so is quite hard to handle as it turns all gooey.

Anything I use is always as fresh as possible.I personally dont trust extracts done by anyone other than myself and I dont trust that the manifacture hasn't adulterated the powders.

I'm aware of Maca being a food crop in Peru and about the 10 gram dose being a minimal beneficial dose.Thats why I ordered large packets of Maca seed.I also learned it keeps for 7 years which is a great plus since I can slice and dry the roots and then store them as long as I need to unlike some herbs.

If you do try the Ashwagandha let me know how it goes.

I tried taking ginseng as an adaptogen and stimulant, however since I have a very sensitive nervous system even a small dose left me feeling overstimulated.I can get a huge caffeine buzz lasting a few to several hours from one or two cans of mountin dew or roughly 55 to 110 mg if I would drink it.Ashwagandha and Jiaogulan are supposed to be like ginseng only better and without an overstimulating effect.

In your opinion does it live up to it's claims?

Ashwaganda has proven to be a very good plant to me. I was impressed when I was using it. Very nice sedatation and health improving properties. If I had a strong extract I would use it daily. But i am like you HypnoT, I don't trust commercial extracts the majority of the time.

It feels good, but I feel some of the claims are a bit on the spectacular side... But it's a really nice herb.
I guess it varies with body chemistry as well.

Yeah a lot of plants are like this. I guess it does vary from person to person .. I think it does have great potential as a healing medicinal herb and a tonic.

growing is DEAD easy.  they grow liek weeds.  you will have no problems (says he who killed the whole lot a few months ago )

never grown the others.  but withania is very easy.

I'v had the Ashwagandha extract in gel-cap form. The effects were slim to none but when you get the gel-cap's you never know what is really in them.

It is good you have seeds so you will be able to grow the plant out yourself and know exactly what your getting. Iv heard good things from close friends about Ashwagandha. They report good sedative effects with no big side effects involved.
