Hi, thanks for the advice about fanning. I will try like you say
Yes I forgot to say I have added lot more perlite too, I have a big bag now. Now there is 10cm of perlite all freshly put under water and filtered the excess.
I am so happy to finally have some results after starting 4 months ago with a growbox that didin't worked. It's really an interesting and emotional hobby

I feel like the original post should be updated. I followed everything meticulously, and finally am taking my jars out of the PC, and I notice they're heavier than when I put them in. take off the foil, then the lid.... condensation on the inside. wet verm layer on top. beyond pissed. fucking fuming. nowhere in these original cake tek posts does it mention this as a possibility.

found that in a thread titled "dry verm layer wet after sterilization?"
post had like 6 replies. seriously what the fuck? feel like I wasted an entire day. I don't even wanna ask, but I'm assuming the jars are fucked now with no dry layer?

Holes in foil. Foil too loose on jar and catching steam. Foil too long and water wicks up.just a couple guesses on what might have gone wrong.
Yes saturated jars is a remake. Atleast you didn't waste spores.

two questions - i read through most of the pages but am a bit high so maybe missed the answers.
1) what purpose does soaking the birthed cakes in water overnight serve? i've only done injection port grain bags -> manure monotub so this step seems strange.
2) it looks like fruits always come out of the sides and rarely the top. what's the story?

1. Lets them absorb a bunch of water.
2. Surface Conditions weren't perfect.

Hello everyone, my friend has followed this guide pretty much all the way. thank goodness for this site! Currently has 12 perfect cakes submerged about to be put into the SGFC, the only thing not understood is - What are you misting the cakes with? Just plain water the whole time? Iv seen some people talk about an iso/water mix, is this needed? Misting 3- 6 times an fanning is understood.
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just water. Iso isn't going to help anything.
Misting is as needed. You mist up when the cakes look dry.
fanning's pointless, your chamber has a shit ton of holes for constant fae.

so i have followed this updated tek and am about two weeks in on 16 1/2 paint jars.
my question is, once fully colonized, how long they will "stay good? at 2 weeks they are at very different states of progress despite my rotating them daily to try and average out any temperature variations.
if the fastest is fully colonized a week before the slowest, am i risking losing the fastest by waiting to birth, soak, and tub it?
thanks!

I inoculated 5 jars last week and so far no mycelium growth is visible. I stored the jars in a glass cabinet that registers around 68-71 degrees with ambient light.
Questions: should I use an incubator box where I can control the temperature?
Is light a factor?

If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page there is a link called "Toggle Favorite".

Hi,
Thank you @Ziran and all contributors for creating this useful updated pf-tek guide. I've been reading all the posts and I couldn't find an answer to this question:
What should be the humidity(RH%) in the room where the jars are stored? Is the jar's humidity affected by room's humidity?
Thank you.

shouldn't matter at all during colonization.

Thank you for taking the time to answer to my question. This helps with the decision of where to place jars.
I've asked this question because I'm keeping different humidity levels using humidifiers inside the house which can varies between 45-55% in some rooms and 25-30% in other rooms. During winter time, the heating system pushes hot air which tends to dry everything and to reduce the humidity levels inside house.
Thanks!

Super noob question - I apologize in advance.
I just mixed up my first BRF cakes and think I have screwed up or maybe purchased the wrong ingredients. I mixed 2 cups of verm and one cup of water but it was SUPER over field capacity. I then got in my head and thought maybe I’m supposed to add the BRF as well, but that made a sort of slushy soup that did not look like any of the photo or documentation previously provided on this thread.
I then re-grouped and decided to stick with then plan and started over. Once again, 2 cups verm, one cup water, then dialed in field capacity. I had to add almost another 2.5 cups (for a total of approx 3.5 cups) of verm before I was at field capacity. I then mixed one cup of BRF in, put them in my jars, dry verm on top, etc etc...
They are on the stove now steaming away, but I can’t help but think, what am I doing wrong? Shouldn’t the ratio be 2:1:1? The verm I purchased was “horticulture vermiculite-fine grade” purchased at my local Lowe’s.
Any thoughts on how I should proceed? Thanks again, from a very grateful hopeful enthusiast.

maybe due to fine grade verm. I have always used course but noticed that when getting to bottom of the bag where it is mostly fine particles it doesn't hold the same amount of water.

Thanks for the reply gypsy - do you think I will be ok to proceed with inoculation tomorrow, or should I dump them out and find a better/larger verm size and try again? I’m not super keen on wasting an entire syringe if it will it sounds like a failure from the get go

As long as you feel like you got the conditions right (not too dry, not too wet) then the amount used to get there isn't too important. It sounds like you have a pretty good grasp on what you were looking for as far as field capacity so I personally would not throw them out. Maybe save some of the syringe just in case but I think (in my unprofessional, non-expert, and absent opinion) that they should be fine.

Beautiful. I dumped out the first two that were thick as oatmeal. Once resetting and getting the verm to field capacity I just added one cup of the BRF and am kind of crossing my fingers. It was certainly drier and more granular - but I don’t know what I’m looking for a final product. Luckily I have 5 syringes in the fridge, so I guess if the first one totally fails, it is what it is, but trying to figure out where to go for next time, pending results of the first batch. Thanks again for your input and temporarily putting my mind at ease.

Oh shit, yeah 5 mss? Go for it man. haha. You can get 10-12 jars out of each 10ml syringe. I'd say noc those up and go ahead and start some more. You'll either get mushrooms, or more mushrooms. haha. Good luck! Hope to see the fruits of your labor soon.
